Despite the development of modern medicine, there are still no procedures that are completely risk-free. There are always minor complications that can occur after undergoing any type of surgery, especially a procedure as complex as Butt Implant Surgery. 

When Butt Implant surgery is performed, the goal is an increase in the projection of the buttocks. This is achieved by inserting gluteal implants made out of silicone. The implants are inserted into pockets created inside or under the gluteal muscles. The incisions are localized in the intragluteal fold, which is an area with a high risk of developing an infection if proper hygiene rules are not followed.

Here are a few complications that can occur after butt implant surgery and how to avoid them:

Infection

Infection is a potential complication after any type of surgery. When butt implant surgery is performed, we can have two types of infection developing: infection on the incisions and deep tissue infection that can develop in the pocket where the implants are inserted. To avoid the latter type of infection, the patient should receive antibiotics through the IV and the surgeon should also make sure to properly clean the implants with antibacterial solution before inserting them into the buttocks. 

If an infection occurs in the internal pocket where the implants are and it doesn’t subside with antibiotic treatment, there will be the need to undergo surgery again to remove the implants and clean the area. Deep tissue infection is usually more complicated to treat compared to the infection that can occur on surgical incisions, which can occur as a result of improper hygiene standards. To avoid this, the plastic surgeon will advise you to take antibiotics for five days post-op and to keep strict hygiene in the area. 

Deep vein thrombosis

This complication can occur when a blood clot forms and blocks a vein. The risk is increased for patients with blood conditions, but also for patients who take birth control medication or don’t get off the bed after the surgery. To avoid deep vein thrombosis, the plastic surgeon might recommend anticoagulant medication, but it is also mandatory to stop taking birth control medication a month before the surgery and get off the bed every couple of hours and walk for a few minutes. 

Shifting of the implants inside the pocket

There are different kinds of implants, including the shape of the implant. When oval implants shift inside the pocket, the buttocks can be deformed and not very pleasant to look at. To avoid the shifting of the implants inside their pocket, it is essential to avoid sitting directly on the buttocks for at least three weeks post-op to give the implants time to settle inside their pockets. Also, lying on the back is to be avoided for the same amount of time.
