Enhancing Coping Strategies to Combat Isolation During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Enhancing Coping Strategies to Combat
Isolation During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Leading studies estimate over 300 million people of all ages have depression. Many residents living in skilled nursing or assisted living facilities go through major life changes that make them more vulnerable to depression because they feel like they’ve lost their sense of purpose in life. Meaningful activities generally fill up the day for many residents, however, the recent social isolation mandate has interrupted the normal schedule for seniors and care staff.

Here are just a few suggestions that may help to reduce feelings of isolation for residents:

  • The use of face time chats for residents to keep in touch with friends and family
  • Continue to engage in talk therapy sessions when available
  • Staff engagement in 1:1 Reminiscence Interactive Therapy Activities (allowing the resident to talk about any part of their life history)
  • Hallway bingo
  • Crossword, puzzles or independent card games
  • The use of audiobooks
  • For those residents that have their own tablets or computers, encourage them to play games, watch movies, read books, etc.

The biggest challenge is remembering that seniors need to feel valued and productive. These are just a few examples, but every resident is different, so it is important for staff to think outside the box.
