Nowadays, we can easily download and install free meditation apps to help us stay motivated in the journey to mindfulness.

Meditation is one of the best ways to start and end the day. This activity can reduce stress, increase focus, and help reduce sleep problems. If you want to try meditation at home, there are a number of applications that can help you.

1. 10% Happier (Android and iOS)

If you are among those who are skeptical of meditation, then I suggest you to check this one out. 10% Happier application that was released on November 13, 2017, provides various explanations regarding meditation and discussion videos with practitioners and meditation teachers. You can also be guided by a coach through the application. If you subscribe to this application, you will be asked to enter a mobile number and a trainer will contact you. The application offers not only guided meditation from the world’s best teachers, but also videos, talks and sleep content that will help you to sleep better.

They also have short inspiration stories and wisdom that you can listen to while on the go. There will be new content released weekly so you will always have new and fresh meditation content.

For the record, 10% Happier is #1 Top listed app in New York Times “How to Meditate” guide. This app was also featured for “emergency election stress” meditations in The Washing ton Post. It’s also launched on ABC’s Good Morning America. It has been downloaded for over 500K times with over 9K positive reviews.

2. Headspace (Android & iOS)

Headspace was released on January 6, 2012. It has over 10 million downloads that receives over 128K reviews. As an introduction, Headspace will provide 10 free sessions for 10 minutes to build a habit of meditating every day. Afterwards, you can subscribe to and participate in various training options, such as meditation to overcome the fear of flying, difficulty sleeping, to manage anger. Interestingly, the Headspace founded by former Buddhist monk, Andy Puddicombe, is equipped with easy-to-digest video illustrations. The celebrity users of this application include Gwyneth Paltrow and Emma Watson.

This application calls itself a ‘gym membership for your brain‘. It will teach the basics of meditation. You can choose meditation based on the duration or problem you are facing. For example, meditation in two minutes or meditation to reduce anxiety.

There are also exercise graphics, a reward system for advanced practice, and features that allow you to connect with others.

This application is also equipped with fun animations to make you understand what meditation is.

3. Calm – Meditate, Sleep, Relax (Android and iOS)

Calm was released on July 30, 2014. It has a seven-day program for beginners to start meditation. This program has a feature that allows you to set your own meditation time, sound, to the natural scenery to help focus during meditation. You can ‘replace’ the noisy atmosphere around with the faint sounds of animals inhabiting tropical forests, the sound of raindrops, to the sound of a campfire.

This application offers a variety of meditation sessions, ranging from 3 minutes to 25 minutes. The topic of meditation is also diverse, ranging from being grateful to increasing self-confidence. This application also contains soothing music that can accompany you on the move.

The users claim that this application help them to lower their stress, relieve anxiety, and get more restful sleep thanks to the guided meditations, sleep stories, breathing programs, masterclasses, and relaxing music.

The application has a tracking feature that will enable you to track your progress and record the time you spent meditating.

Calm is free to download and use and there are no ads. Similar to Headspace, after completing the seven-day program, you can subscribe to get other programs.

4. Stop, Breathe & Think (Android & iOS)

Stop, Breathe & Think was released on September 29, 2014 and has gotten over 1 million downloads that received over 18K reviews which 78% of the users claim that they get positive feelings after they just finished one session.

This meditation application wants you to do three things: pause for a moment from the activity, check your breathing, and think about the feeling when it is felt. This application aims to invite you to observe thoughts and feelings without judgment to foster kindness and compassion.

This application provides more than 55 meditation options so that you will not be bored with the exercise.

There are various segments of exercise that can be tried according to topics such as depression, sleep, affection, anxiety, and so on.

This application can also record your daily meditation practice to track your progress. You can subscribe to the premium version to enjoy more features.

5. Smiling Mind (Android & iOS)

Smiling Mind was released on October 6, 2014 with over 500K downloads and 2K reviews. This application was originally created for children and adolescents, but can also be used by adults. Through this application, children starting from as young as three years old are invited to recognize feelings and master emotions. While adults can learn meditation according to certain topics, such as the ability to listen and eat consciously. So this application is suitable for meditation as a family or even with teachers in the class.

The Mindfulness app was released on October 8, 2012 with over 1M downloads and 11K reviews. This application is perfect for those of you who have often meditated. But that does not mean it is not suitable for beginners, because in the ‘library’ column you will find various catalogs that will guide the user. You can set the time to start meditation and you can choose the duration needed for each session.

This app has daily guided mindfulness meditation sessions for better sleep, relax and focus. This application also allows you to access thousands of meditation music tracks and ambient sounds. In addition, users can adjust meditation with background sound and meditation tool intervals according to comfort.

Through this application, you can join community groups and follow your favorite teachers. This app is also giving you the stats and milestones for tracking your progress. Pretty neat, right?
