Pelvic Pain: Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options

Causes of Pelvic Pain:

Pelvic Pain is pain that arises in the region of a woman’s reproductive systems – the pelvis. It may be a symptom of infection or arise from pain in your pelvic bone. In women, Pelvic Pain can very well be an indication that there might be a problem with one of the reproductive organs in their pelvic area (uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix and vagina).

There are several gynaecological issues that can cause pelvic pain:

  • Uterine adenomyosis:

Uterine adenomyosis is a condition in which the lining of the uterus grows into the muscle walls of the uterus. This growth may cause pelvic pain.

  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI):

A UTI causes inflammation in the lining of your urinary tract. The inflammation may create pain and pressure in your pelvic area.

  • Appendicitis:

The appendix is an organ connected to the large intestine. Appendicitis is a disease related to the appendix. It causes pain in the pelvis. The pain can be very acute pelvic pain.

  • Kidney Stones:

Kidney stones block the flow of urine from the kidneys. This causes severe pain in the belly area or in the side of the back.

Diagnosis of Pelvic Pain:

When your healthcare provider diagnoses the cause of your pelvic pain, they will review your symptoms and medical history. A physical exam or other tests might be used in determining the cause:

  • Pelvic exam:

A pelvic exam can find symptoms of illnesses like tense pelvic floor muscles. Your doctor will check for areas that feel tender. If you feel any pelvic pain during this exam then you must inform your doctor.

  • Lab tests:

A lab test can check for chlamydia, gonorrhea or other illnesses. It can include a blood test to measure your blood cells and a urine test to examine your urinary tract.

  • Ultrasound:

Ultrasound is a test that uses sound waves to take pictures of tissues, organs and other parts inside the body. It can find growths or cysts in the uterus.

Treatment of Pelvic Pain:

The treatment of pelvic pain depends on the cause, intensity and frequency of the pain. Here are some pelvic pain treatments:

  • Medications:

Pain relievers.

Medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen can lower the pain you feel. However, pain medicines alone rarely get rid of chronic pain.

Hormone treatments.

If the days when you have pelvic pain overlap with a phase of your period, then birth control pills or other hormonal medicines may relieve you of your pelvic pain.

  • Therapies:

Physical therapy.

Physical therapy can moderate chronic pelvic pain. It can involve learning helpful stretches and relaxation techniques, getting a massage and other procedures that treat pain.

Spinal cord stimulation.

Another word for this is neuromodulation. It involves implanting a device that blocks neural pathways to your brain that perceive pain.

Trigger point injections.

Trigger points are tight and sensitive areas on the body. Shots of numbing medicine are injected into these spots that help block pain.

  • Surgery:

Laparoscopy.

Laparoscopy can treat or remove the tissue outside of the uterus that causes pain. During the surgery, a slender viewing tool enters through an incision near your belly button. The tissue that is causing pain is removed through one or more of these cuts.

Hysterectomy.

Hysterectomy is a surgery that removes your uterus. This surgery has key health consequences. Your doctor will explain the benefits and risks to you in detail.
