CLEAN BEAUTY: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Everyone wants to use clean Beauty products, but does anyone actually know what clean means? Well, clean beauty has a very subjective meaning, which may vary from person to person. When a brand launches products without using non-toxic ingredients that are not harmful for the human body, is generally stated as clean beauty.  The idea of clean beauty also includes when brands are transparent by listing all the ingredients on beauty products. The lack of transparency could be seen when products contain ingredients such as paraben, suphate, mineral oil, artificial fragrance, talc, aluminum compound, petroleum etc.

The buzz of clean beauty started with the controversial study on parabens on 2004, which found traces of parabens in breast cancer tissues. This reignited the concern about the harmful chemicals that were present in the beauty products. The clean beauty movement in India basically started with the help of social media. Organizations like EWG and Campaign for Safe Cosmetics made it easy for the consumers to check the ingredients online.

The first step towards a clean beauty routine is to get started with 5 toxic ingredients you should avoid, besides parabens and sulfates are: PHTHALATES,TOLUENE,PROPYLENE GLYCOL,BHA & BHT,FRAGRANCE.

Are clean beauty products and natural beauty products same thing?

Many consumers believe that “natural” is better and healthier than others. Natural or organic beauty is formulation of cosmetics products using organically framed ingredients i.e., plant-based products. When it comes to skincare some natural or organic products can be extremely problematic. Your expectation of a natural product may not always match the manufacturers’ use of the term, and with essential oils like lavender and tea tree, which have been linked to possible endocrine disruption, sometimes it can be more beneficial to opt for a safe synthetic ingredient. Some companies are also responsible to market their personal care products as “all natural” or “100 percent natural” when the products contained a number of synthetic ingredients. Clean beauty can be 100% non-toxic, however natural or organic doesn’t imply its non-toxic. Don’t get it twisted but, a product can be natural and toxic at the same time.

Few clean beauty brands that are worth trying:

  • Biotique
  • Lotus Herbals
  • Burt’s Bees
  • Disguise Cosmetics
  • Ruby’s Organics
  • SoulTree

“One of the things people don’t realize about clean makeup is that it is an extension of skincare,” says Tara Foley, founder of clean skincare retailer Follain.
