Sedation Dentistry Is a Great Way to Overcome Dental Anxiety

Even at the best of times, we know that many people have significant Dental anxiety. It’s hard to make a visit to the dentist because of fear you might feel about the experience.

And, of course, now that anxiety level has increased. Going anywhere is a more anxious experience these days, and you might worry that the risks are higher at the dental office. You can’t just skip dental care at this time–your oral and overall health depends on getting regular dental care.

We want you to know that we follow all the recommended protocols to reduce the risk of potential infection. As an experienced practitioner, Dr. James B. Polley has selected a great dental team, highly capable of incorporating the new protocols into our routine. We have all the recommended tools and technologies necessary to maintain safety in our dental practice.

But we also know that no matter what we say, you might still feel anxious. However, if you are anxious, we offer Sedation dentistry to help you overcome your anxiety and feel comfortable at our office.

Sedation Dentistry Options

Dr. Polley has long offered sedation dentistry to help his patients have a great dental experience, and is able to offer multiple sedation dentistry options to his patients so that everyone can get the level of sedation consistent with their needs.

We offer three different sedation options:

  • Oral sedation
  • Deep sedation
  • General anesthesia

Each of these sedation options has benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to make sure you get the one that’s right for you.

Is Oral Sedation Right for You?

Oral sedation is the mildest form of sedation dentistry we offer. It’s a great choice for overcoming mild to moderate levels of anxiety. It’s a good choice for people who find dental visits uncomfortable to the point of skipping them altogether. In addition to anxiety, oral sedation helps with :

  • Strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Restlessness during your appointment
  • Soreness after your appointment

Oral sedation is simple: you get a prescription for a pill to take before your appointment and you get a ride to and from the dentist. You’ll be awake but unconcerned during the procedure, and you might not remember much about it.

Is Deep Sedation Right for You?

Deep sedation is a more involved sedation procedure that’s best for people with moderate to severe anxiety levels. Deep sedation actually causes you to lose consciousness. However, you are not deeply unconscious, and you can be roused at any time.

It’s a good choice for people who haven’t responded to oral sedation in the past.

General Anesthesia

We also offer general anesthesia, which induces a deeper state of unconsciousness than deep sedation. When you have general anesthesia, it is not easy to rouse you from unconsciousness.

Usually, we only recommend general anesthesia for patients with the worst dental anxiety who can’t sit still for a procedure (possibly because of developmental disabilities), and/or those with highly invasive procedures.
