Home Remedies for Individuals with Braces

At Legacy Orthodontics, we strive to minimize the discomfort an individual will experience following braces treatment by making sure you leave the Office comfortable. Some initial discomfort is expected, and most concerns can be remedied at home. If the discomfort is serious enough that it warrants you to visit the clinic to see Dr. Neel Reddy, please call our Edmonton Dental Office at (780) 643-7474 or email us at [email protected] to schedule an appointment.

FAQ’s

I just had my braces put on and they hurt

Most patients experience some discomfort or soreness following braces. If your teeth are sore, Advil or Tylenol would help alleviate the pain unless you are allergic to them. The soreness should not last more than 1-3 days and if the pain is persistent for several weeks, please call our office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Reddy.

Food stuck between teeth

If food is stuck between the teeth and braces is hard to get out, please use a dental floss to dislodge the food. A water flosser (waterpik) is a great tool to help dislodge food struck in braces and is a useful adjunct to regular brushing and flossing with braces.

My appliance came loose

If your fixed appliance becomes loose, please retain it in your mouth and keep it stable with wax or Gishy Goo and please call our office to schedule an appointment.

My bracket is loose

If a bracket (small rectangular brace) is loose, please leave it in place until you are seen for your appointment. Most of the time the bracket stays attached to the archwire. You may use a small tweezer to flip the bracket if it is a source of irritation or apply wax or Gishy Goo.

My appliance is bent

If any appliance becomes bent or broken, please call our office to schedule an appointment for an adjustment.

My archwire has come out

If the wire comes out of the back-molar tube and is cutting into the gums, take a pair of tweezers and slide it into the back-molar tube. Most of the time this will solve the problem. But if you are not successful in doing so, or afraid to do so, place a piece of wax or Gishy Goo in the area. Please call our office to schedule an appointment.

My wire is too long

If the wire is too long on one side, please place a piece of wax or Gishy Goo to prove temporary relief and call us to schedule an appointment. Only cut or snip the wire as a last resort as it might accidently damage your mouth or damage the braces.

My retainer is broken

If your retainer is broken, bring all the pieces with you for repair. If you lose or break your appliance or retainer, an impression will be taken to remake it. There may be a fee for the repair or replacement of the appliance or retainer. Please contact our office to schedule an appointment.

My spacer has fallen out

If your separator (spacer) has fallen out and your appointment is in a day or two, do not panic. Please keep your scheduled appointment and you do not have a make an emergency appointment. However, if your separator falls out immediately (within a day or two) of it being placed, please call our office to schedule an appointment.

My elastic (rubber donut) has come off

If you elastic (rubber donut) has come off, please call our office to schedule an appointment.

My chain is broken

If your c-chain breaks, please call our office to schedule an appointment.

My ligature wire is poking

If a ligature wire is poking or causing irritation, use a Q-tip to tuck the ligature under the main archwire on the side of the bracket. If you are not able to, please call our office to schedule an appointment.
