More Than 30% of Heart Attack Deaths in Malaysia Involved People Under 60: MOH

In Malaysia, ischemic Heart disease, or heart attacks, caused 20,322 fatalities in 2022, making up 16.1% of all deaths with medical confirmation. Three-quarters of heart attack deaths were in people under 60, whereas about 65% of deaths were in seniors 60 and over. According to data from the Ministry of Health (MOH), those under the age of 60 account for nearly a third (35.2%) of heart attack fatalities in Malaysia.

In a written Dewan Rakyat reply dated March 26, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad informed Segamat MP Yuneswaran Ramaraj that Ischemic Heart Disease, or heart attacks, accounted for 20,322 deaths in 2022, or 16.1% of all medically confirmed deaths.

Compared to 2021, when 21,490 heart attack fatalities were reported, this represents a drop of 5.4% (1,168). According to age category, people 60 years of age and above account for about 64.7% of heart attack deaths. Roughly 30.9% affect people in their 40s to 59s, 3.7% affect people in their 30s to 39s, and 0.6% affect people under 30.

There are controllable and non-modifiable variables contributing to the rise in heart attack mortality.
Dzulkefly emphasized that the main non-modifiable factor contributing to heart attack deaths is advanced age. By 2040, the proportion of people in Malaysia who are 65 years of age or older is predicted to rise to 14.5%.

Obesity is the primary modifiable factor associated with heart attack deaths; 19.7% of Malaysians are classed as obese by the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2019 (NHMS 2019), which also includes smoking behaviors. Additional non-communicable illnesses and risk factors that are closely linked to heart attack deaths include diabetes, which affects 18.3% of adults over the age of 18, hypertension, which affects 30.0% of adults over the age of 18, and high cholesterol, which is particularly prevalent in 38.1% of adults over the age of 18.
