Patient Profile: About Mr. Andrew

Andrew Skalem is a decorator who lives in Bristol, England. He had been experiencing hair loss for quite some time now, but he hadn’t taken any active steps towards it. He visited Nepal as a part of his trip. He wanted to enjoy the natural beauty and trek in Nepal. On his journey, he was casually looking up about hair transplant, when he came across Folliderm. That step changed his life forever.

Why Did he go for a Direct Hair Transplant?

On his search, Andrew came across the Folliderm website. He says that he had researched a lot of hair therapies already. Among his studies, he found Folliderm to be a good option. He was evidently at safe hands. After a free consultation and a few diagnosis sessions, he was in the treatment room, relaxed, and enjoying the TV, ready to go back home with growing hair. At the clinic: Diagnosis and Suggesting the Best Hair Transplant

When Andrew joined in, our doctors and staff were all hands at the desk to provide him with the best option. He had a consultation with our Doctor. In the meeting, he was shown a presentation regarding hair loss, hair transplant, and much more. Mr. Andrew had doubts of his own, and our team tried to answer all of it. He also looked at our previous client’s pictures in detail. He was provided information about different therapies that he could have had as well. The results of The Diagnosis

Mr. Andrew was identified with Grade Four Alopecia. During this stage, hair loss at the temples and a thickened bald patch on the crown is common. It is also the stage where hair loss starts becoming very evident. Many patients with Grade 4 hair loss decide to undergo a hair transplant procedure at this stage.

Note: The degree of Pattern hair loss is usually identified using the Hamilton-Norwood scale. Hair loss on the crown starts as a whorl (at the back of the head). It spreads outwards to produce the baldness of a circular pattern. This continues with different stages, each stage having more hair fall than the previous. The next step was in identifying how many grafts would have to be transferred. This is a very crucial step, as hair once plucked cannot regrow from the same region. At Folliderm, we try to harvest as many grafts as needed to achieve a natural look, but not a single more. We also try to keep the number restrained to value the client’s budget. In the case of Andrew, he still had the right amount of hair at the back of his head. We decided 3600 grafts would be the optimum amount. Four thousand grafts would have been a burden on his pockets, as well as unnecessary. However, 3000 grafts would not give him a natural, dense hair look in the end. 

The Procedure

“I’m slightly nervous, but mainly very excited to get a full head of hair.” – Andrew, right before the procedure. 

Mr. Andrew’s entire process of Direct Hair Transplant took one and a half days. On the first afternoon, slits were made into the balding areas. He was all set for the hair transplant on the next day. Then, on the second day, ten members were on duty. Two doctors were present, and they guided and handled the transplant themselves. The hair grafts were being extracted by some of the team members, being loaded by some, and a doctor was present at all times at the insertion stage. This combination of skill and teamwork made the entire process smooth and easy.

At the end of the procedure, the receding hairline and crown area of Andrew’s head was covered with newly grafted hair. 

Mr. Andrew’s Testimony: How was the process?

At the beginning of the process, he was given an anesthetic to help with any pain involved in the procedure. According to him, there was a small amount of pain when the anesthetic was given. But after that, he described there being ‘nothing.’ He got so comfortable during the procedure that he even fell asleep. There were frequent breaks in between, and he was given meals as well, which Andrew describes as being delicious.

The Folliderm team also loved having Andrew. Television was on during his treatment. For his enjoyment, we played some Music and Dance numbers. Later, when enquired about it, he said that he loved the brilliant dancing as well. We are glad to have made the process so comfortable for him.

Additionally, our staff was available at all times at his request. Like with all patients, we tried our best to make him feel at home.

After The Transplant

Once the procedure is performed under special care by our professional team, the journey is not over. In the first few days to weeks, you need to put extra attention to your hair and the donor and recipient area. We stayed in touch with him even after the transplant was done. We provided him with certain medications to help boost the process. There are also some dos and don’ts everyone needs to follow after a transplant, which we guided him with. These precautionary measures are generally straightforward, like:

1. No swimming for 14 days
2. No alcohol for seven days.
3. Avoid exposure to dirt in the air at work or play for two weeks. etc

The Progress

Mr. Skalem’s journey was incredible to watch. Once he started growing hair, he seemed much more confident and radiant already. It was a pleasure to be a part of that journey.
