How to Eliminate Negative Thoughts?

Trying to think positive? And people told you the best way to get rid of Negative thinking is by actively asking a question or pushing thoughts out your head. I guess that did not work. That is why you are on this page. The best way to get rid of negative thoughts is clearly explained in this post.

The number one problem with trying to eliminate negative thinking is……. “keyword” trying to erase it. The action put towards trying to get rid of the thought actually make the thought occur more.

When I first started out with trying to eliminate negative behavior I would try to push it out my head by saying “I don’t care” or trying to forget about the thought in my head.

This technique which I call the “Suppressing Technique” made everything worse. I bickered with myself. Going back and forth with “I don’t care” and the negative thought inside my head caused overthinking and headaches. It was terrible.

Try it. When you start to think negative, try to get rid of the thought, and see what happens.

If you are still reading this then you must have found out the suppressing technique does not work. The suppressing technique gives power to the thought which then takes over your mind.

So, if you don’t read or understand anything else in this article get this……DO NOT GIVE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS POWER!

The more you give it power the more it will take over your brain. And drive you crazy. Here are 3 things to do to get rid of your negative thoughts power (a bad thing).

Do not fight your Thoughts

The first one is don’t try to fight your thoughts which is a form of the suppression technique. Fighting your thoughts actually makes it worse.

Fighting your thoughts makes the brain focus on the thought and it keeps recurring. This will cause you to fight back and have an argument going on in your head. Trust me this is not fun. This can cause stress and headaches.

Do not ask question or reasons with your thought

The second one is don’t ask questions or reason with your thoughts. This is what most sites teach, and I do not understand why.

They tell you to question the negative thought which put the focus on it. For example, I watched a video and it said every time you have a negative thought…ask yourself “is this useful?” A negative thought is never useful which is the point of this video.

This is not effective because it allows room for excuses. If I ask you is something useful, you might try to come up with excuses of why it might be useful or not. You can have split decision on a situation.

Having a split decision will cause a flood of overthinking and the negative thought will still be there. Your negative thoughts are the same thing as a person who you have given one opportunity to give an opinion and now they think they can speak whenever they want. The negative thought abuses their power once you give it power. Don’t give your negative thoughts power by asking questions or reasoning with it.

Do not give the thought Emotions

The third one is to not put emotions into your negative thoughts. Emotion is the number one reason people have trouble with negativity in general. That is why emotional intelligence is a hot topic in the workforce and in life.

Every time a negative thought comes into your brain you feel an emotion with it such as anger, scary, and sad. These are emotions people associate with their negative thoughts and the brain focuses more on these thoughts because it has feelings with them. So, every time a negative thought comes in mind do not give it emotion. Emotion gives the negative thought the most power out of the three don’t do’s.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

I have given you things you should not do, and I know you are waiting for what you should do and here it goes: when your mind flashes with a negative thought, don’t do anything. Let it fly past without giving it judgment, emotions, or questioning it.

I have this quote that I read every day to myself to remind me of this practice. It states, “Negative Thoughts are like visitors let them come and go as they please.” Anytime you have a negative thought, just remind yourself of that.

The best thing is to do is to breathe deeply fives times and to sit back and analyze your negative thoughts. Have fun with it. Sit back and act like you are watching a movie of the negative thoughts. I promise you they will be eliminated without you doing anything. The fewer emotions, judgment, and questioning you give the thought the easier it will disappear.

So, the solution in a summary is to not give your negative thoughts power. How? First, breath deeply five times. Then state to your self, “Negative thoughts are like visitors. Let them come and go as they please.” Next, do not give these thoughts any emotions, judgment, or questioned it. I promise you they will disappear.
