5 Tools Used By Dentists

Walking into the Dentists office can be a daunting task. Some of the sounds you will hear are that of a drill buzzing, brushing and grinding. These are all sounds that come from tools at the dentists' disposal. In fact, dentists use a multitude of tools to help them to do their job more effectively. Today, I will be highlighting five of some of the most common tools that you will see in a Dental office.

To begin, I'd like to start with scalers. A scaler is a small tool used to remove tartar build-up from teeth. Scalers have a pen-like look to them and usually, have a hook on both ends. Scalers are actually one of the least intimidating tools that dentists will use. The reason for this being that they are used primarily on the surface of teeth. Scalers are important because tartar (also known as calculus) builds-up and sometimes results in aggravating the gums.

Equally as important, a mouth mirror is another device that is minimally intrusive similarly to a scaler. This instrument has a long handle akin to scalers. Mouth mirrors are most commonly used for two reasons. First, they allow the dentists to examine teeth closely in areas that he/she would not normally see as easily. Second, you will commonly see Dentists using this vital tool to push your tongue to the side of the cheek. This is done so that your dentist can better access a specific area of your mouth being worked on.

A sickle probe in the next item on our list. Sickle probes look similar to scalers as they have a hook on them and are used to remove tartar build-up. However, unlike scalers, sickle probes are used firstly to analyze areas between and on teeth. The dentist will press on teeth with the sickle probe to find areas of teeth that may have been compromised by cavities. This tool is important because it allows the dentist to find and treat cavities not usually seen by the naked eye.

Just as important as the sickle probe, another common tool utilized by dentists is the dental syringe. Dental syringes are used at the beginning of oral surgery to deliver anesthetic to gums and surrounding tissue. As a result of its use, the area surrounding the injection site becomes numb. This allows you to not feel any pain while the dentist performs vital invasive dental work. As such, Dental syringes are a necessary and important part of the Dentists' toolkit.

Lastly, a dental drill is what you are most likely to hear upon entering a dental office. These drills provide the impressive ability to remove tooth decay caused by cavities quickly, and effectively. In fact, dental drills turn at an impressive two hundred and fifty thousand rotations per minute. Many dental drills also spray water to simultaneously wash away particles while drilling. While the vibrations of the dental drill may feel uncomfortable, it is completely painless once you have been numbed with the dental syringe.

Knowledge of items in the Dentists toolkit helps so that you know exactly what is being used and how it is being utilized. This, in turn, aids in eliminating some of the fear of the unknown that comes with visiting the Dentist. In the dentists' toolkit, there many items. These five tools indeed, are just a few of the most common items you are likely to see in any dental clinic.
