Is ProSolution Plus for Premature Ejaculation Worth a Try?

Highlights

  • ProSolution Plus is an herbal supplement that claims it may be able to help men with premature ejaculation.
  • As premature ejaculation has multiple causes and remains poorly understood, there’s likely no single treatment for men experiencing it.
  • Most of the ingredients of ProSolution Plus have no claims or evidence that they treat premature ejaculation.
  • Men experiencing premature ejaculation should speak with a doctor and use medication that’s been more thoroughly tested.

Premature Ejaculation is estimated to affect up to 40% of all sexually active men at some point in their lives. ProSolution Plus claims to be able to help men suffering from Premature Ejaculation, yet our investigation suggests that the buyer should beware.

What Is Premature Ejaculation?

Let’s start by defining normal. It’s important to know that there’s no average time it takes a man to ejaculate after penetration. There are a wide range of variables, and “normal” can be anywhere from one to 30 minutes.

However, a multinational 2005 study found the mean time for study participants was 5.4 minutes. By this standard, many men who feel they climax too quickly are actually well within the normal range.

The best definition of premature ejaculation (PE) is when a man ejaculates too soon for intercourse to be satisfying for him or his partner. This is often defined as within fifteen seconds to one minute of penetration, but there is no official time frame.

Researchers still aren’t sure what causes PE, but they generally agree that PE can be:

  • A symptom of another disease, such as prostatitis (an infection of the prostate) or issues with the nerves of the penis
  • Related to dysfunction of the body’s systems, like the endocrinological system
  • Tied to mental health concerns or worries about sexual performance
  • Caused by unrealistic expectations based on pop culture or pornography

In other words, it’s a complex problem with no easy solutions. Many men who struggle with PE have turned to ProSolution Plus for premature ejaculation. We decided to investigate how well it has worked for them.

What Is ProSolution Plus?

ProSolution Plus is an herbal supplement claiming it provides “natural male enhancement.” If you read the official website carefully, you’ll notice that they avoid making any medical claims. It doesn’t cure any specific condition or symptoms; it just “improves your libido” and “makes you last longer in bed.”

This is a yet another dubious product from Leading Edge Health, which makes other “male enhancement” supplements including VigRx and ExtenZe, which we’ve reviewed in other articles. Importantly, it’s not a medication and hasn’t undergone rigorous clinical trials.

What Are The Ingredients in ProSolution Plus?

On their website, Leading Edge lists seven ingredients, citing a source for each claim:

  • Tribulus terrestris. This herb is claimed to relax the corpora cavernosa in the penis, making it easier for blood to enter. The study they cite, however, was conducted on rats, and there’s been little study of this claim elsewhere.
  • Withania somnifera. This plant, also known as ashwagandha, is said to have positive effects on stress, testosterone levels, and overall sexual well-being, but we weren’t able to find direct evidence that it can improve premature ejaculation.
  • Asparagus adscendens. This may alleviate stress and inflammation, but it’s not clear if this effect extends to humans.
  • Mucuna pruriens. This herb contains L-DOPA, which has been linked to increased erection frequency and sexual activity. But so far, the only species that we know experiences these benefits are rats.
  • Asteracantha longifolia. This supposedly increases desire and gives you better control of your orgasms, but again, so far, we’ve only seen these benefits in rodent studies.
  • Curculigo orchioides. This herb is another one that supposedly makes you more sexually confident and more likely to have sex, but the study cited was done on animals, not humans.
  • Asphaltum. Also called shilajit, this is a common supplement in Ayurvedic medicine that supposedly contains a high amount of essential minerals. As the name implies, yes, it’s related to asphalt.

Of note is that none of these, separately or in combination, were shown to be harmful to human health. But the key takeaway from this ingredient list is that all of the studies cited have significant limitations, and none of the claims that they can help with PE are substantiated.

Then there’s the issue of ingredients that may not be on the label. Pro Solution, a related product, was the subject of a 2017 warning by the FDA for containing sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, though it didn’t appear on the label. And Leading Edge Health got in trouble with the FDA in 2019 for its claims related to other products.

Is There Research to Support ProSolution Plus?

Many of the claims of effectiveness for ProSolution Plus are drawn from a study conducted in 2011 that reports the participants saw better erections and were less likely to experience premature ejaculation. The full study is available on their website.

While the study is interesting, it seems to have been the only one conducted on this product, and it only looked at a small sample of 147 Southeast Asian men. By contrast, a phase III clinical trial for an FDA-approved medication can involve between 300 and 3,000 participants.

They also tout the endorsement of Dr. Dave David. Notably, however, Dr. David isn’t a urologist or in a similar discipline — he’s a cosmetic surgeon and obstetrician.

Does ProSolution Plus Work?

Leaving aside the relatively limited evidence for the effectiveness of the ingredients, one of the key issues here is that because we don’t really know what causes premature ejaculation in the first place, we can’t really say anything treats it, either.

Four out of seven ingredients on the label of ProSolution Plus aren’t known to treat premature ejaculation. The remaining three are at least related, but if you’re not having any problems with getting an erection, you likely can secure a preparation of these from an herbalist for the same cost or less.

And if you suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED), medications are available that have been thoroughly tested in humans and have been on the market for decades that have been shown to work.

One in particular, tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, holds some promise in treating some forms of premature ejaculation in some circumstances. In addition to talking to a doctor about tadalafil, take the following steps:

  • Discuss your premature ejaculation with a doctor. Get the facts, not the myths. Some cases of premature ejaculation are considered “perceived,” and the issue is not with your body but may be psychological instead.
  • Get a check-up. There are real medical causes of PE, especially if it starts happening suddenly.
  • Talk with your partner. Perhaps the biggest myth is that your partner finds PE inherently disappointing or a problem. Don’t assume that it is; talk to them about it and see what they have to say.

These steps should help you begin figuring out why you’re experiencing PE and what to do about it.

What Does Work for PE?

If you’re experiencing premature ejaculation, skip the supplements and use the tools that have proven track records.

The mainstay of premature ejaculation treatment is behavioral techniques. Therapy, including exercises like the start-stop or squeeze methods, are often part of a successful PE treatment plan.

Men with PE have also found that using benzocaine to reduce sensation can help to prolong orgasm. Benzocaine is available in the form of wipes that can be applied right before sex. You can also purchase condoms that contain benzocaine as a component of the condom’s lubrication.

Penis rings that fit around the base of the penis can also help to delay ejaculation. Penis rings are fitted over your shaft after you become erect and can be easily removed and cleaned after sex.
