Startup Aims to Bring Telemedicine for ED to UK

U.K. customers struggling with erectile dysfunction now have an online source for help. Newly launched Numan uses telemedicine technology to reach out to men who have gone untreated because of their reluctance to discuss intimate matters of sexual function with their doctors.

A London-based entrepreneur is using telemedicine to bring help to British men suffering from Erectile Dysfunction. Utilizing a business model already proven successful in the United States, Sokratis Papafloratos in early 2019  launched Numan, an online market for generic ED medications.

Market research confirmed to Papafloratos that many impotent men in the United Kingdom go without treatment because they feel uncomfortable discussing their ED symptoms face to face with their regular doctors.

A New Source for ED Help

To help reach those reluctant ED sufferers, Numan provides a forum where they can interact remotely with Licensed Medical Professionals who can prescribe an ED drug if the would-be customer is an appropriate candidate. While this is a relatively new marketing concept in the United Kingdom, it’s been in use for more than two decades by a handful of U.S. online facilitators such as eDrugstore.com.

Unlike eDrugstore, however, Numan is a subscription service that will ship a specified number of generic ED drug tablets on a monthly basis until the customer cancels his subscription. The basic monthly package includes eight 50-milligram tablets of sildenafil citrate, Viagra’s generic equivalent, for roughly $30 a month. Generic Viagra is nothing new in the United Kingdom, having been available there since 2014, the year Pfizer’s U.K. patent for the drug expired.

Numan Also Sells Tadalafil

Also available from Numan is tadalafil, the generic equivalent of Cialis. Tadalafil’s basic monthly package includes eight tablets of 10 milligrams each for just under $42 a month.

Numan’s launch as a subscription ED drug service is similar to the U.S. business models of Hims and Roman, which first began operations in 2017. Like eDrugstore, Hims, and Roman, Numan requires customers to complete a detailed medical history questionnaire that must be cleared by a physician before any drugs are shipped.

How Telemedicine Works

By interacting remotely with licensed medical professionals, Numan’s customers are spared any potential embarrassment of face-to-face consultations with their doctors to discuss sensitive matters of sexual health and function.

However, it should be emphasized that such telemedicine-facilitated interactions are in no way a substitute for regular medical checkups. Because ED can itself be a symptom of more serious underlying health issues, men should see their doctors on a regular basis.

Like its American counterparts, Numan eventually hopes to add other lifestyle medications to its offerings. Based on a recent visit to the website, it appears that hair-loss treatments may be the first such addition.

With more than 2.25 million prescriptions filled since the late 1990s, eDrugstore has perfected the telemedicine model in the United States. From its headquarters in Tempe, Arizona, eDrugstore ships ED medications and other lifestyle drugs and products to customers all across America. All of the prescription medications it offers are FDA-approved.

For men who don’t have a prescription, eDrugstore can set up a complimentary online consultation with a licensed U.S. physician who can authorize a prescription if appropriate. To learn more, visit its Erectile Dysfunction page.
