7 Common Medications That Can Cause ED

Having trouble getting it up these days? Before you panic, you might want to check out your medicine cabinet to see if you’re taking a medication that causes erectile dysfunction. If so, your doctor may be able to find a more erection-friendly substitute.

Rare is the prescription or over-the-counter medication that has no side effects at all. In fact, most Drugs can cause a number of unwelcome effects, although most are mild and often disappear upon continued use of the medication.

So it’s hardly surprising to learn that certain common drugs can make it more difficult or even impossible to get and keep an erection suitable for intercourse. Here is our list of some of the more common offenders.

1. Antihistamines

Available by prescription and also over the counter, antihistamines are prescribed primarily for the relief of seasonal allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, watery eyes, and itching. Included in this class of Medications are diphenhydramine, also sold under the brand-name Benadryl; dimenhydrinate (Dramamine); hydroxyzine (Vistaril); and promethazine (Phenergan).

2. High Blood Pressure Medications

Among the antihypertensive drugs, diuretics — especially thiazide and loop diuretics — are perhaps the biggest offenders. Also troublesome can be some of the beta-blockers, including atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor), and propranolol (Inderal).

3. Antidepressants

These medications may chase the blues away, but with them may go your ability to achieve and sustain a robust erection. Most likely to cause ED are the antidepressants classified as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. These include such widely prescribed drugs as citalopram (Celexa),  fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft).

Other culprits among antidepressants include serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or SNRIs, such as Cymbalta and Effexor, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as Marplan, Nardil, and Parnate.

4. Acid Reflux Medications

Some of the medications prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) can ease your symptoms of heartburn but cause heartache by making it more difficult to get an erection. These include a class of drugs known as histamine H2-receptor antagonists, which are available both over the counter and by prescription. The most problematic of these H2-blockers is said to be cimetidine, which is also sold under the brand-name Tagamet. Other H2-blockers include famotidine (Pepcid) and ranitidine (Zantac).

5. Muscle Relaxants

Prescribed to reduce the discomfort of muscle spasms and spasticity, muscle relaxants can also interfere with Normal Erectile Function. Among the drugs in this group are cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) and orphenadrine (Norflex).

6. Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs

While not all NSAIDs are known to interfere with normal erectile function, a couple have been identified as particularly problematic. These are naproxen (Naprelan and Naprosyn) and indomethacin (Indocin).

7. Opioid Pain Medications

If you’re taking hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (Oxycontin), or morphine to deal with postsurgical pain or other chronic pain issues, don’t be surprised if you are having difficulty in getting and keeping an erection.
