What Science Says about Yohimbe for Treating ED

A popular herbal remedy for erectile dysfunction, yohimbe is available in numerous over-the-counter supplements. However, research seems to indicate that its benefits are outweighed by its potential dangers.

Widely used as a treatment for Erectile Dysfunction in the years before the introduction of Viagra, Yohimbe — or its derivative yohimbine — is still a popular ingredient in herbal remedies for ED. Despite its long history as a treatment for impotence, its actual efficacy and safety remain uncertain.

Yohimbe itself is an evergreen tree found growing throughout much of West Africa. Extracted from its bark are multiple alkaloids, the most commonly used of which is yohimbine.

Only Marginal Improvement

Despite its long history as a treatment for ED, yohimbe appears to achieve only marginal improvement in impotence symptoms in the few scientific studies that have been conducted. However, its benefits as a treatment for ED seem to be outweighed by its Potential Dangers at higher doses.

In an article posted at HealthyButSmart.com, it is noted that one of the problems commonly associated with yohimbe is poor quality control. In other words, you can never be certain that the yohimbe in supplements you purchase is as pure and free from foreign ingredients as you would like. As a result of poor quality control, “potentially life threatening toxicity . . . makes this a very poor choice for any modest gains that it might offer,” the article cautions.

Given the potential dangers of treating your ED with herbal ingredients such as yohimbe, it’s much wiser to opt instead for proven prescription medications such as Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis.
