So, Acne or pimples look terrific on your skin when they appear out of a sudden, and refuse to go away soon. What is more annoying is that despite being prevalent among young individuals in their 20s and 30s, some adult acne is so adamant to get rid of during the 30s. They look to haunt us even in our 50s. We use over-the-counter drugs or acne creams with a traditional formulation like benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics to wreck havoc on the acne bacteria. But, they seem to be less effective on the skin and also cause the skin to suffer other side-effects.

However, scientists have developed a novel acne cream, which is highly effective on pimples without being too harsh on the skin.

Acne forms when oil glands in the skin become clogged. Once these oil glands come in contact with hair and other skin cells, bacteria called Cutibaceterium acne find the environment suitable for their growth. So, when they erupt, they release inflammatory molecules to appear as red pustules, commonly known as pimples or acne.

Although acnes are not so life-threatening, they can cause facial skin scarring, which is quite irritating.

Right at the moment, we have a range of acne treatments infused with benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics. But, they can provide a relief to those mild acne in nature. For the aggressive kind of acnes, they fall short of active ingredients to act properly on them. That apart, they cause various side-effects in the form of skin dryness, bleaching, and also stinging. On the other hand, bacteria being very resistant to the current treatment methods, antibiotics do not trigger any solutions.

Scientists at Princeton University devised a plan that by blocking the pathway of inflammatory receptor caused by C.acnes bacteria, it is possible to avoid the occurrences of pimples on the skin.  

A new type of anti-inflammatory compound named SIG 1495 was developed in the lab to use in a Cream. The cream was then tested on the participants with moderate to severe acnes along with other formulations like benzoyl and placebo. The participants used the new cream for eight weeks, twice a day.

The study saw improvement up to 79% for those who used the newly developed cream with the compound SIG1495, while others had only 56% improvement using benzoyl peroxide. Participants using placebo did not show any signs of improvement.

The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Dermatology, claimed that the new formulation does not cause any side-effects like other traditional acne creams. The product manufacturer Eduardo Perez at Signum Biosciences claimed that it can offer as much benefit as compared to benzoyl peroxide for the acute acne sufferers.

Further, the study suggests that the new product has potentially worked by blocking the signaling receptor in the inflammatory pathway. At the same time, the product is effective in killing those adamant acne bacteria.

For severe acne cases, retinoid medications have been used for long. The treatment aims at preventing excessive oil production in the skin, responsible to cause severe pimples. However, they are not averse to side-effects like sore muscles and peeling of the skin. Hence, the road ahead for the scientists is to curb this factor linked to severe acnes.

The company claims to make the new product with SIG 1495 by the next year. We keep our finger crossed to avail the product as soon as possible so that we can get relief from irritating and annoying acnes sooner.
