Blue Apron vs. Home Chef: Which Meal Kit Is Best?

We call Home Chef the winner in this category only because you can choose from a small list of allergens (pork, poultry, beef, fish, shellfish, mushrooms, tree nuts and sesame) during setup. But honestly, neither company offers much in the way of dietary considerations.

With Home Chef, you can increase or replace the protein in almost every dish, such as switching to antibiotic-free meats or replacing fish with fillets, ground beef with ground turkey, or impossible meats. Blue Apron offers a similar level of customization for some dishes, but not all.

Blue Apron recipes can be filtered by beef, pork and fish free recipes.

Blue Apron offers more than 70 new recipes per week, and Home Chef offers up to 30 weekly options. But it’s worth noting that neither Blue Apron nor Home Chef is the best meal kit delivery service if you follow a special diet like gluten-free, keto, or paleo. If that’s you, you should check out our picks for the best paleo services, the best Whole30, and the best gluten-free kits.

The only diet that Blue Apron and Home Chef seem to support is vegetarian, which you can specify in your preferences when you sign up. While both brands clearly label any foods containing the eight major allergens (wheat, milk, soy, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, fish and shellfish), each warns of possible cross-contamination.

Choosing a winner in this category was a difficult decision. Home Chef’s wide selection of protein options, portion sizes, cooking levels, and toppings offers more customization for dietary needs than Blue Apron.
