Earth Lovers’ Guide To A Green Diwali in 2020

The dos and don’ts that really matter this Diwali.

By SAAPH

Don’t: Use/buy gift baskets/hampers packed in cellophane paper or plastic sheets.
Do: Give gifts in reusable bags. Your family/friends might like this more than the gift itself.

Don’t: Gift dried fruits/savouries in wastefully decorated packaging.
Do: Gift them loose in cloth potlis.

Don’t: Use metallised or glittery plastic packaging sheets to wrap gifts.
Do: Wrap them in used newspapers if required.

Don’t: Use rolls of cellotape/staples, as they render paper non-recyclable.
Do: Use flour-based glue (paste made with flour and water).

Don’t: Put any plastic bows/ribbons/cards on your gifts.
Do: Attach a handwritten note for a personal touch.

Don’t: Use any thermocol/polystyrene packaging or decoration.
Do: Use plant-based decorations and cow dung-based pooja kits and idols.

Don’t: Give bouquets wrapped in cellophane or non-woven material sheets. Remember, non-woven material is not cloth. It is a form of plastic.
Do: Gift potted plants instead.

Don’t: Use any disposables for your parties, not even biodegradable ones.
Do: Avail reusable utensils from your nearest Bartan Bank.

Don’t: Bring home waste, ie, plastic bottles and takeaway containers, from an outing.
Do: Carry your own bottles, cutlery, cups, plates, when going out. Bring back Diwali sweets and eats in your own dabbas/tiffins. Keep such a Sustainability Kit with you on all outings.

SAAPH (Sustainable Alternatives Awareness Against Plastic & Household Waste) is a citizens’ awareness initiative by concerned residents of Arun Vihar, Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
