WHEN TO GET YOUR EARS CHECKED?

Almost 4 million Australians have some form of Hearing loss, so it’s important to be aware of your ear health. Usually, hearing loss is permanent but there are many ways you can prevent hearing damage.

World Hearing Day is on the 3rd March. It coincides with Hearing Awareness Week in Australia, held from the 1st to 7th March. It’s a timely reminder to get your hearing checked and to not let hearing loss limit you.

What causes hearing loss?

The most common causes of hearing loss are age or excessive exposure to loud noise. Other causes include:

  • Ear infections
  • Exposure to certain chemicals or medications including aspirin some antibiotics and some cancer drugs
  • A head injury.

Nearly everyone experiences hearing loss to some extent as they get older. However, in some cases, genetics can also play a part.

Signs of hearing loss

The following signs may indicate that you need to get your hearing checked:

  • Ringing sensation in the ears
  • You often have to ask people to repeat what they say
  • People complain that you talk too loudly
  • You find it hard to hear conversations, particularly if there is background noise
  • You need to turn the TV up louder than other people might.

Ways to help hearing loss

Unfortunately, most types of hearing loss are permanent, but there are many things you can do to protect your hearing before damage.

The best way to protect your hearing is to limit your exposure to loud noises. Here are some things you can do:

  • Keep your music, TV and radio down
  • At live music events or clubs, wear earplugs or take frequent breaks
  • If you work in a noisy workplace, wear earplugs or ear protection equipment
  • Take breaks when using headphones
  • Don’t listen to music at more than 60% of the maximum volume.
