Nutrition Specialist Debunks Top Weight Loss Myths!

All right, Dr Melina, Let’s jump right into the first myth. This is a crazy one.

Yeah Don’t eat until your stomach starts growling and, talking to you, The idea that you should have your stomach rumbling is absolutely preposterous, because you’re gon na make poor decisions.

You’re gon na go to the drive through You,’re gon na devour the bread basket.

You’re not gon na take the time to cook healthy meals.

You’re gon na overeat when you do eat So there’s.

So many reasons why this is just a really really bad decision and you should never let it get this far, But you should pay attention and let yourself get somewhat hungry and get back in touch with that.

So that is a truth.

Now, Dr Melina, let’s get to another myth.

Extreme fasting can help break through weight loss plateaus.

What do you think about that’Cause? This is so confusing. Extreme fasting is extremely dangerous, especially when it’s not done under medical supervision.

You can have risks of arrhythmias of your heart because of electrolyte imbalances.

You can have dangerously low blood sugar.

You can suppress your immune system, which is certainly not something that we wan na be doing right now, Plus the weight loss is too rapid and this can trigger eating disorders.

Binge eating anorexia.

There’s just so many reasons why extreme fasting is not the way to go.

Dr Melina Here,’s, the next myth, the faster you lose weight, the better Huh It’s, not a race Yeah, and unfortunately, I wan na hear your comment on this.

Yeah I mean we, you know, we learned a really hard lesson from a hit TV show that I’m not gon na mention where people lost weight very quickly and a study actually showed that six years later, they had still done permanent damage to their metabolism And most of them regained all the weight, but they had permanently altered.

How many calories their body burned, Plus most people, unless they’re exercising like crazy, are gon na lose a considerable amount of muscle.

So it’s, really the perfect storm for rapid weight regained, So rapid weight loss is definitely not the way to go. If you wan na do this permanently.

Hmm Now, Dr Melina, here’s, one that I’ve always heard.

One pound a week is as fast as you wan na go.

What is the optimal amount of weight that a person should lose in a week And is there a difference between men and women in that number Experts say one to two pounds a week.

But if you’re a woman or you’re older or you have a thyroid abnormality or you don’t have that much weight to lose.

It’s going to be slower.

And if you’re a man and you’re younger and you have a lot of weight to lose in the beginning of it, it may be faster, So you really have to take into account your specific characteristics and find a realistic weight.

But on average, one to two pounds a week is really what we recommend for safe long term: healthy weight loss, Okay Boy, you said it Dr Melina, As always.

Thank you for helping us break down these myths.

We know that it’s such a difficult problem that we sympathize It’s not easy, but there is a right way to approach it. It has to be individual and has to incorporate all the issues of proper diet exercise and dealing with the mental aspect of losing weight.

A hundred percent.

Absolutely All right, I think yeah.

This just did such a disservice to people Yeah Thanks, Dr Melina Thanks doc.
