The Dos and Don’ts of Botox

Botox injection remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed today. This simple procedure removes wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that sit under them. It can also prevent wrinkles from deepening over time.

While Botox is merely a simple Treatment, there are still some dos and don’ts of it in order to obtain the best result.

Be transparent with your injector

For your own safety, you should tell your injector about your medical history as detailed as possible in the consultation so that your injector can determine whether you are a good candidate to receive Botox and how to give a better long-term result.

Tell your injector:

  • What medication and  supplements you are taking
  • What allergies you have
  • If you have medical conditions or illnesses
  • If you had or will have any medical procedures
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Also, some medications which can thin the blood may result in post-Botox bruising, so it is the best to stop taking these medications a week before you get Botox injections. These medications include:

  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen, either generic or Advil, Aleve, or Motrin
  • Vitamin E
  • St. John’s Wart
  • Fish oil or Omega-3s

If you are unsure about your medications, as we mentioned above, you can always discuss them at your consultation.

Have realistic expectations about Botox

Though Botox is amazing, sometimes it is not the only anti-aging treatment you’ll need. Often Botox is paired with other treatments such as dermal fillers. And in many cases your lifestyle plays an important role in anti-aging.

Your post-Botox results may not be as perfect as you expect. Therefore, having realistic expectations about your results will save you from unnecessary disappointment. You can also talk to your injector about what you could expect.

Stay upright for 2 hours after treatment

The typical time to recover after treatment is 2-4 hours. Even though you may want to take a short nap after treatment, you should stay upright for at least 2 hours. This is to avoid pressure in the injected area and to avoid increased blood flow which may cause Botox to be dispersed and the result to only last for a short period of time.

Move the injected areas

For the first hour after treatment, though you should stay upright, this does not mean you need to stay completely still. In fact, for the first hour after treatment, you should move the injected areas by making pronounced facial expressions such as frowning, smiling, or raising your eyebrows. This helps the Botox to be quickly absorbed by the targeted muscle and reach the cells it needs to in order to work.

Don’t overdo it

With Botox, it is not always “the more, the better” –– a little goes a long way! Overuse of Botox can cause the muscles to become too weak to support the flesh, which may result in unnatural looks or even dropping of the face. The most natural looking results come from the right amount of Botox. A skilled injector will know how much you need to look best!

Don’t put pressure on injected areas immediately

Though you may be tempted to touch or rub the injection site, you should avoid putting pressure on injected areas so that the Botox does not move. This means you need to be careful when cleansing your face by not pressing down too hard and do not wear tight caps or garments in the areas that have been injected or do a facial massage.

Moreover, there are some facial treatments such as laser treatment that you should not do after injecting Botox for some period of time. Asking your injectors for more details about what treatments you should avoid is always a good idea.

Don’t exercise right after treatment

In order to let the Botox settle in, you should skip your workout sessions for at least 24 hours. It is best to just let your body relax, especially with the post-treatment bruising and redness that often occurs after Botox.

For your best result, do the exercise before you receive Botox and wait until the next day to carry on.

Here are the dos and don’ts before and after your Botox treatment. Remember these tips and the best result will happen!
