5 Myths and Facts about Acne

Tags: acne skin

Most of people, no matter age or gender, have struggled or is struggling with Acne. Like most skin conditions, acne is complicated. Common misconceptions will not do any help to prevent or treat it. In order to help you understand better about who gets acne, what causes it, and how to treat it, here we reveal 5 common myths and facts about acne.

Myth 1: Only teenagers get acne

Fact: We have already mentioned this common misconception in our previous blog post 4 Tips to Treat Your Acne From the Inside Out. According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, acne can affect people at any age –– babies, teens, and adults. Also, three-quarters of adult acne occur in women due to the constant fluctuation of hormones during each menstrual cycle and even during pregnancy.

Myth 2: Acne is caused by dirty skin

Fact: Having acne does not mean that your skin is dirty. Pimples form in the deeper layers of your skin when a pore becomes clogged with sebum, a natural oil produced by oil glands in the skin, dead skin cells, and bacteria; whereas dust only stays on the surface of your skin. Therefore, dirt will not necessarily cause acne as long as you wash your face in time afterwards.

Myth 3: Wash your face many times a day can prevent acne breakouts

Fact: Indeed, washing your face in the morning and at night is important to maintain a clear skin. However, washing your face too frequently actually irritates your skin and exacerbates the problem. When you wash too much, you strip the skin of its natural oils, which makes the skin hydrated. Then the skin will overcompensate by producing more oil, which can clog pores and worsen the breakouts.

Myth 4: Toothpaste can make acne go away

Fact: Though toothpaste contains substances such as baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, essential oils, and triclosan that can dry out acne, it is not designed for your skin. In fact, toothpaste is too harsh for the skin and can cause irritation and rashes. Instead of using toothpaste to treat acne, try some clinically proven products that treat mild or moderate acne symptoms without drying out your skin.

Myth: All acne can be treated the same

Fact: As we stated in the beginning, acne is complicated. There are many elements that need to be considered when determining what treatments you need –– the stage of your acne, whether it is mild, moderate, or severe, your skin type, and even your age. This is why certain treatments work for some people but not for others. It is recommended to ask an expert and find out what acne treatment will work best for you.
