Trans Fat Will Soon Be Banned; Here’s What This Means For People’s Health

Trans fat to be banned

Get ready to enjoy a healthier version of your favorite guilty-pleasure donut! The United States is finally putting an end to the use of partially hydrogenated oil (PHO), a type of Trans fat commonly found in commercial baked goods that has been linked to heart disease and other health issues.

This means that the removal of Trans Fats from the food supply is finally coming to a close. In 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that artificial trans fats were unsafe to consume, and gave the food industry three years to reformulate their products and ensure a smooth transition in the market.

As of January 1, 2021, the final date for complying with the removal of PHOs, which can be found naturally in some meats, has passed. Now, you can indulge in your favorite treats with peace of mind, knowing that they are free from harmful trans fats.

In August of 2023, the agency released a direct final rule, which made the decision permanent and enforceable.

This process was intended for non-controversial rules, which allowed the agency to issue a rule without the need for a double review process.

Beginning on December 22nd, 2023, no grocery stores will be allowed to sell products that contain PHOs.

This decision follows in the footsteps of other countries such as Denmark, which was the first country to ban trans fats back in 2003. Since then, restrictions have been imposed by Switzerland, Iceland, Canada, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, and many other countries.

Several regions in the United States, including New York City, California, and parts of Maryland, have set limits on trans fats.

In 2008, New York City implemented a city-wide phase-out, meaning food establishments were not allowed to store, use, or serve foods containing half a gram or more of trans fat.

In 2010, California’s Trans Fat Bill came into effect, prohibiting restaurants from storing, serving, or distributing PHOs in connection with food preparation.

Montgomery County, Maryland, was the first county in the United States to ban trans fats completely, with restaurants and grocery stores that prepare food limited to 0.5 gram or less.
