Scared Of Having Heavy Metal Toxicity? Here’s What You Can Do About It

Heavy Metal Toxicity is something that people are terrified of, and they should because it can lead to serious health issues. Check out the latest reports about how you can defend your organism against this.

Heavy metal toxicity

For many years, people have been cautious of the dangers of lead paint, the amount of tuna they consume due to its high mercury content, and deodorants containing aluminum.

They have taken these precautions to avoid heavy metal poisoning and feel safe. However, a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in 2022 suggests that up to 170 million Americans, or half of the US population, may have been exposed to lead poisoning during their childhood.

Heavy metal poisoning usually does not have any noticeable symptoms, but it can lead to severe health problems such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke. The toxins from heavy metal exposure act like a “silent killer” that can cause long-term damage to the body.

In 2018, a review was published in the British Medical Journal, which found that exposure to arsenic, cadmium, copper, and lead can increase the risk of CHD and CVD.

More than that, it is also important to note the fact that common symptoms of exposure to these metals can include low body temperature, dehydration, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, numbness or prickly sensation in the hands and feet, and a scratchy throat.

It may not always be clear that one has been exposed to lead, as symptoms of heavy metal toxicity may not be immediately noticeable, especially if only a few symptoms are present at a time. The intensity of these symptoms can also vary depending on the level of exposure.

Counteracting toxicity

To counteract heavy metal toxicity, consuming antioxidant-rich foods can be extremely beneficial. While heavy metals such as iron, copper, and zinc are essential for many of our biological processes, excessive levels generate free radicals that cause oxidative stress.

According to a 2010 study published in the Pharmacognosy Review, this can “adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases.”

Wholesome, unprocessed foods should always be our choices for better health.  A 2010 study in Nutrition Journal examined more than 3,100 foods, herbs, spices, and supplements for their power to protect cells from free radicals and for their antioxidant potency.
