Early health signs that might be announcing diabetes

Early detection of diabetes can be a game-changer in preventing its complications. A recent study presented at the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Hamburg emphasized the importance of identifying early precursors in patients’ Health histories.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows that over 37 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes, and this number is expected to exceed 60 million by 2060. This number can lead to a financial and health crisis, with an annual cost burden of $327 billion.
The UK research team analyzed data from the Diabetes Alliance for Research in England study, which focused on common clinical conditions in 1,932 adults over a period of 50 years.

They discovered that several health conditions, such as hypertension, respiratory infections, asthma, and heart diseases, were present in individuals long before they were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes (TD2).

For instance, almost one in three individuals had respiratory tract infections two and a half years before being diagnosed with diabetes, which was much higher than the rate observed in those who were not ultimately diagnosed. This trend was consistent across different illnesses.

“It’s well known that high glucose levels notably impact the immune system, even in pre-diabetes,” Dr. Andrew Demidowich, assistant professor in the Division of Endocrinology at Johns Hopkins Medicine said recently.

He continued and said this:

“However, the study’s notable finding of a heightened rate of respiratory infections in patients years before their diabetes onset is particularly interesting, and it may not be something many doctors are currently watching for.”
