Insomnia Breakthrough Treatment: Ancient Remedies for Autonomic Nervous System Disorders

If you’re using sleeping pills for your frequent insomnia, you might want to consider stopping and trying something different, something natural. Check out the latest reports about a cure below.

Treating insomnia

After a good night’s rest, we often wake up feeling refreshed and energized to face the day.

Unfortunately, more and more people are experiencing difficulty sleeping soundly or waking up frequently during the night despite sleeping for a short period of time. These issues may be caused by disorders in the Autonomic Nervous system.

Dr. Chen Junru, the director of Jinghe Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic, recently shared on the “Health 1+1” program how acupoint massage, along with certain ancient Chinese medicinal prescriptions and herbal teas, can help regulate the autonomic nerves and be a part of our daily dietary therapy.

It’s fascinating how the autonomic Nervous system, a part of the peripheral nervous system, controls involuntary physiological activities like heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. It’s made up of two parts: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system.

When you feel excited or anxious, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in, causing an increase in blood pressure and heart rate, and halting gastrointestinal peristalsis.

But when you’re relaxed or at rest, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over, resulting in a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate, and the resumption of gastrointestinal motility.

It’s amazing how a balance between these two systems ensures that you can be active when needed and rest when necessary, thereby maintaining the normal functions of your body.

If there is a problem with your autonomic nervous system, it may cause a range of symptoms throughout your body. These could include insomnia, waking up too early, fear, palpitations, chest tightness, breathlessness, dizziness, and tinnitus, amongst others.

There may also be problems with your gastrointestinal and digestive system, such as gastroesophageal reflux, as well as skeletal and muscle issues, like numbness in your hands and feet.

Personality traits could affect the autonomic nervous system

Who is more susceptible to autonomic nervous system disorders? According to Dr. Chen, one’s personality can influence both their life and physical health. Individuals who are highly motivated and responsible or under persistent stress are more prone to experiencing poor sleep or digestive issues.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) identifies this type of person as being susceptible to “liver and qi stagnation.”

TCM refers to the body’s energy as “qi,” which continuously flows throughout the body, promoting blood circulation and maintaining various physiological activities.

Obstruction of qi can lead to disease. The liver plays a vital role in the movement of qi, but it is also sensitive to emotions. When one experiences great emotional stress, the liver’s energy can become blocked, leading to overall energy stagnation.

According to Dr. Chen, a liver and qi stagnation constitution can progress into a constitution with symptoms of qi stagnation and blood stasis over time.

Blood circulation is closely tied to qi movement, and if qi is not flowing smoothly, it can result in poor blood circulation and “blood stasis.”

For instance, female senior executives may be more susceptible to uterine fibroids due to qi stagnation and blood stasis. This begins with stress, which can lead to sleep and menstrual disorders that may eventually progress into tumors.
