Diabetes Drug Becomes Useful for Weight Loss

Losing weight can be a long and difficult process, especially if you want to do it naturally. The human body is able to lose weight much harder than it gains weight. Constant physical exercise, going to the gym, and eating less are the first actions you need to take if you wish to lose weight naturally.

On the other hand, if you want to lose weight by relying on medication, the first thing you should do is to expose your problem to a dietitian. There are plenty of factors you need to take into account when you try to lose weight through meds. Getting enough sleep, avoiding alcohol, as well as how and what you eat are all important in the process of trying to lose weight.

Saxenda could be beneficial for weight loss

Liraglutide Injection, which is also known as Saxenda, is a new weight loss medication making waves in the market. However, the drug actually has a long history under the name Victoza, as it was used for treating type 2 diabetes. This drug is also a synthetic version of the hormone GLP-1, which helps the body produce insulin when you eat. Unlike the natural GLP-1 that quickly degrades in the bloodstream, Liraglutide has been modified to resist degradation, allowing it to remain active for a few hours.

Saxenda has shown promising results, with people typically losing 10-15% of their body weight in roughly six months. Moreover, continued drug use helps prevent weight regain, a common challenge when treatments are stopped abruptly.

Similar to any medication, Saxenda does come with side effects, but most of them are relatively tolerable. Those side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. The drug is administered through daily self-injections, as the peptide hormone cannot be taken orally due to digestion issues. However, researchers are exploring new technologies with the goal of developing an oral version and even an annual injection.

It’s worth keeping in mind that Saxenda and other GLP-1 medications come with warnings about rare side effects as well, such as pancreatitis and a potential risk of medullary thyroid cancer. However, this specific type of thyroid cancer is extremely rare and mainly observed in animal studies, so it shouldn’t be a significant concern for more common types of thyroid cancer.
