Jill Biden and Selena Gomez Partner to Raise Awareness on Mental Health Issues

May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States. On this occasion, the first lady, Jill Biden and Selena Gomez have partnered up to participate in the Youth Mental Health Action Forum. The event will be hosted at the White House on Wednesday, the 18th of May, and it is organized by MTV Entertainment and the Department of Health and Human Services.

The organizers declared that the event is meant to “drive culture from awareness to action on mental health through storytelling and media”, according to The Hill publication. On the official page of the Youth Mental Health Action Forum, the President and CEO of MTV Entertainment Group, Chris McCarthy, stated that „we are going a step further and empowering young people to use storytelling to share their powerful voices and diverse experiences to help themselves and support others”.

The 29-year-old singer and actress, Selena Gomez has become well known for being an advocate for the destigmatization of mental health issues. Last year, together with her mother, Mandy Teefey, and Daniella Pierson, founder of The Newsette, the artist launched a platform called WonderMind, that aims at creating a safe community for people who seek to improve their mental state.

In an interview with InStyle, Gomez declared that “I’m most excited about the community we’re creating — I think it’s so important for us all to remember that we’re not alone. We wanted to create a space to encourage users to go to know that they’re seen and heard, and that their feelings are valid. I know how lonely and intimidating it can feel to ask for help but with the support of a community, it won’t be as scary or taboo to discuss openly.”

Together with Jill Biden and Selena Gomez, the event also includes a wide list of creators and mental health activists who will collaborate and communicate on the topic.
