Ernest Shackleton was a polar explorer from the UK, who led three expeditions to Antarctica. He did it from 1907 to 1909, and together with three colleagues, he completed the Nimrod expedition. He also established a new record when it comes to the distance traveled from the South Pole. Back in 1921, after he returned from what it would be his last expedition, he died of a heart attack, and he was buried in Antarctica. All he knew died with him.

Bright Side made a mini-series in 2018 called “Strange Things Found in Antarctica.” There, they showed how researchers discovered something bizarre. There were two bottles of Scotch whiskey hidden in the ice for more than 100 years. After scientists discovered them, they did not remove the ice trap, because they did not want to damage the findings. They needed to wait some years until they had the necessary equipment to the site.

Why is this Scotch worth our attention?

When they got out the boxes carefully, the whiskey was defrosted in 2 weeks. The bottles survived for a century. The  Mackinlay bottles were manufactured back in 1898 after the blend was 15 years old. They found them in 2010. These bottles were among the three crates of Scotch and two bottles of brandy which they found in that ice. Scientists had a private jet take the bottles from Antarctica to New Zealand for analysis back in 2011.

We don’t know the recipe for this whiskey, but Whyte & Mackay has recreated a limited edition of about 50,000 bottles. They did it after they received a sample. It is believed they took it with a syringe through the cork of one of the bottles.
