Typical Steps in Cataract Surgery

A Cataract is an eye condition in which a cloud develops on the lens. Our eyes’ lens is made of a protein; when the proteins break down, they form a cloud on the lens, causing blurry vision. You can check for cataract by yourself, by standing in front of the mirror and looking into your eyes, or you can consult an ophthalmologist for seeking cataract treatment in Pune. The ophthalmologist will recommend some screening tests for accurate diagnosis of cataracts. A cataract is very common, and typically surgery is a permanent solution to treat it.

The term surgery might make you a bit nervous, but the fact is, it can be done within hours and without hospitalization in many cases. Still, if you fear the surgery, let us enumerate the steps of cataract surgery, for knowing the steps in advance may help alleviate your fear.

# STEP 1: Eye Mapping

There are two types of cataract procedures, traditional and laser surgery. In laser surgery, this step is taken immediately before performing cataract surgery. In this approach, multiple scans of your eyes are taken and the data is processed; that helps the surgeon know exactly where and how deep an incision has to be made to ensure perfect results. It is a more accurate form of surgery compared to the traditional method.

# STEP 2: Cataract Softening

In a cataract, when the lens turns hard it becomes tougher to operate, and the doctor has to make a deeper incision to remove parts of it. Cataract softening procedure is done to loosen the lens, using ultrasound waves while mapping the eyes. It makes the surgery more accurate, easier, and less painful.

# STEP 3: Incision

In order to remove the cataract, the doctor must give anesthesia and then make an accurate incision right at the site of lens. The incisions may vary, 6-8mm long and 0.3 mm deep. The anesthesia numbs the site, and the patient does not feel the incision.

# STEP 4: Breaking And Removing The Cataract

Right after the incision is made, a penlike device is inserted in the gap that breaks the lens using ultrasound waves. The broken parts of the lens are then sucked out from the site using a suction device. If the lens is too hard, the doctor will choose to incise the lens entirely instead of breaking it.

# STEP 5: Replacing Lens

In this step, the artificial lens is placed at the original lens site after removing broken pieces. You will have an option to choose from a range of lenses before the surgery procedure. Your surgeon may help you in selecting a lens suitable for your eye, lifestyle, and budget.

#STEP 6: Healing

After completing the surgery, you will be escorted to a recovery area where some medication and a medicinal patch will be applied to your eyes for healing. After half an hour, your doctor will give post-surgery instructions and a prescription for quick recovery of eyes. You must follow them diligently.
