7 Weird Types of Yoga You Never Knew Existed

Tags: yoga classes

Oh yes, doing yoga along side goats something.

There are countless number of Yoga classes existing to push you physically and mentally (yoga in a 100 degree F room, for example). But these yoga practices take “om” to a different level — and it’s more than just leaving your comfort zone. This may even allow goats to walk on you, strip down naked in class, or even make you scream at the top of your lungs. These types may not be for everyone, but even if you can’t find the courage to try them, you won’t regret taking the time to know about them.

1. Cannabis Yoga

Ganja Yoga

People who use marijuana for nonmedicinal purposes tend to do so to unwind, de-stress, and center themselves — a similar list of reasons some people have for practicing yoga. So, for some, the combination is a no-brainer.

Dee Dussault, a yoga instructor in San Francisco, offers classes in yoga (both with or without cannabis), tantra (a type of yoga designed to help you explore your sexuality), sex coaching, and ganja yoga. In February 2018, she told CBS News that combining weed and yoga helps to “loosen your muscles, and lower inhibitions so you’re more likely to try different moves.” The classes open with a sort of “cocktail hour” of different weed products which participants can sample, while hanging out and breaking the ice. Following the opening session is an hour of yoga with brief smoke breaks. Similar classes are being offered in a range of states, such as Colorado, Massachusetts, and Washington, DC.

2. Tantrum Yoga

Tantrum yoga wants you to stop acting your age, and asks you to do just what it says: Throw an adult tantrum. In a typical tantrum yoga class by creator Hemalayaa Behl, you’ll find participants screaming as loud as they can, stomping their feet, pounding their chest, and more. (Check out her YouTube promo post to see it in action.) Following these tantrums, there’s a quiet sense of calm and relief which makes for the ultimate catharsis. If you have some bottled up rage to take care of, this is for you.

You can take a tantrum yoga class by Hemalayaa by checking her events page on her website.

3. Nude Yoga (Noga)

Naked yoga — or “Noga” — may sound intimidating, especially if you’re a bit self-conscious about your body. But you can’t deny that there’s something completely liberating about stripping down to nothing and letting go of yourself for an hour. And that physical sense of freedom is what naked yoga is about.

Noga has gained popularity over the last decade and the practice can be found in many large cities, including New York City and Los Angeles.

You can try naked yoga at the Bold & Naked studio in New York City and the Naked Yoga studio in Los Angeles.

Athletic couples and athletic friends, this yoga is calling your names. Acroyoga is a partner practice that involves a combination of three things: yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage. There are two different kinds of acroyoga: lunar and solar. Both involve working together to balance in various poses, except lunar focuses more on massaging the muscles, whereas the acrobatics are more advanced and more heavily involved in solar. Either way, Acroyoga is very playful and a great way to bond with a friend, partner, or even someone you just met after signing up!

You can locate all acroyoga classes nationwide by checking the Acroyoga International website.

5. Aerial Yoga

Yoga, but in the air. Held up by carabiners 3 to 4 feet above ground, these soft fabric hammocks are made of high density nylon material and can support up to thousands of pounds. Aerial yoga benefits include many of the same as regular yoga, such as flexibility, focus, strengthened muscles, and stress relief. But because of the freedom of the hammock, you can move your body in deeper positions, resulting in more fulfilling stretches. You’re also forced to use muscles to stay balanced.

Try a class at Om Factory in New York City, Aerial Artique in San Francisco, or Up Flying Yoga in Los Angeles.

6. Goat Yoga

Let’s take a moment to thank Lainey Morse of Albany, Oregon, for blessing us with the unconventional genius that is goat yoga (now there are over 200 spin-off classes offered all over America). As you may have guessed, these classes are much like traditional yoga classes, but with one major exception: live goats. At Morse’s original studio (or barn), your classes will be accompanied by goats all raised by Morse herself, which roam free as you strike your poses. They may climb on your back, snuggle up to you on your mat, or make noises in your ear. And while Morse admits that the concept may sound silly, she truly believes that it helps people with health conditions. “People come in that have anxiety, depression; they’re recovering from cancer or illness,” she said in an article published in January 2017 by CNN. Her class has become so popular, there is a 1,200-person wait list!

You can head to Morse’s website to find all goat yoga class locations.

7. Dog Yoga (Doga)

Why wouldn’t you want to do yoga with man’s best friend? “Doga” offers mutual health benefits for both humans and their fluffy friends by encouraging mind and body healing in dogs the same way it does in humans. Stress release, focus, and stretching are just some of the benefits doga offers. Classes usually begin with dogs laying on their sides with their humans on the mats next to them. Obviously, your canine might not be able to master every stretch, but they leave happy, relaxed, and with a sense of importance.

Doga classes are offered in London and by Anna Farkis in New York City.
