Who are Todd and Julie Chrisley?

Before delving into the reasons and telling you about Todd and Julie Chrisley’s update, we want to tell you about who Todd and Julie Chrisley are. Todd Chrisley, originally named Michael Todd Chrisley, grew up in South Carolina and became a successful real estate mogul and businessman. He came from a modest background, with his mother Faye Chrisley working long hours at a textile mill to support their family. In the past, Todd was married to his high school sweetheart Teresa Terry.

They have two children together, Lindsie and Kyle. Their divorce was messy, but it was during this time that Todd met Julie Hughes, a local bank employee from South Carolina. Todd instantly fell for Julie, captivated by her beautiful smile and the connection he felt with her on a soulful level. Julie had been previously married to Kenneth Wayne Childress, a construction worker who passed away in 2012 at the age of 46.

Todd and Julie got married in 1996 and soon welcomed their first child, Chase, who would later join them on their popular reality TV show “Chrisley Knows Best” as a co-star. Their family grew again when their daughter Savannah was born in August 1997. With their two children, Todd and Julie built a successful real estate management company called Chrisley Asset Management.

They moved to the affluent suburb of Roswell in Atlanta, Georgia, to establish their business empire. A few years later, Todd and Julie welcomed their second son, Grayson, into the world in May 2006. Although Todd’s children from his previous marriage, Lindsie, and Kyle, appeared in “Chrisley Knows Best” to some extent, their relationship remained distant. In 2016, Todd and Julie gained full custody of their granddaughter, Chloe, as her parents Kyle and his ex-wife Angela Johnson were unable to care for her.

Why did Todd and Julie Chrisley have to go to Prison?

In 2019, Todd and Julie Chrisley were accused of doing some illegal things. They were charged with bank and wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy. The accusations said that they tried to avoid paying around $2 million in state taxes from 2008 to 2016. The people who said these things also claimed that Todd and Julie used their company, 7 C Production, to hide over $1 million from the tax authorities.

They said that Todd told someone to make fake documents about their money and things they owned. Todd and Julie turned themselves in and said they didn’t do anything wrong. In October 2019, the Georgia Department of Revenue said that Todd and Julie didn’t owe any state taxes.

They checked everything and found out that for four of the years, Todd and Julie had actually paid too much tax. So there was no money owed for those years. There was only one year where they made a mistake and owed a bit less than $77,000 in unpaid taxes.

TV Stars Sentenced to Prison

In November 2022, Todd and Julie received prison sentences. Todd got 12 years, and Julie got seven years. They also have to do probation for 16 months.  Initially, the Chrisleys were assigned to serve their sentence in Florida, but Julie Chrisley has since been directed to report to a facility located in Lexington, Kentucky. Meanwhile, Todd Chrisley will be reporting to a federal prison in Pensacola, Florida.

After their sentencing, their TV shows “Chrisley Knows Best” and “Growing Up Chrisley” were canceled by USA Network. A few months later, Todd went to a prison in Florida, while Julie, who had breast cancer before, went to a medical center in Kentucky. Savannah is currently responsible for her younger brother Grayson and niece Chloe, as their parents are incarcerated. She has acknowledged that this situation is challenging for her, given the absence of her parents.

Savannah, known for hosting the podcast “Unlocked,” has also discussed her parents’ imprisonment on the show. She said her dad’s hair turned gray, her mom is having a harder time with her sentence, and she thinks the prison conditions are cruel.

When asked about the allegations, the Bureau of Prisons didn’t comment specifically, but they mentioned that they follow guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency and other official sources. Even though it has been more than six months since the sentences, Todd and Julie’s family kept on trying to appeal their convictions. In the end, their efforts bore fruits, and their sentences were reduced on September 9, 2023.

Bottom Line

The recent Todd and Julie Chrisley update brings hopeful news to fans of the reality show couple. With their prison sentences astonishingly shortened, there is a renewed sense of optimism surrounding the future of Todd and Julie Chrisley.
