In 2001, Barry Bonds was voted the best sportman of the year in the United States based on a survey conducted by the news agency Associated Press.

Bonds scored 136 points in the poll and outstripped the bicyclist Lance Armstrong, who won the Tour de France race for the third time in a row. The third place was shared by baseball player Ichiro Suzuki and golfer Tiger Woods, who scored 43 points each. Famous American basketball player Michael Jordan with 3 points took only 15th place. 82 sports journalists took part in the survey, who listed the names of the top 25 sportsmen in their questionnaires.
