The desire of self- destruction

“Unless your name is death, I would probably never flirt with you”.

How many times people tended to risk their lives? How many times people tended to flirt with death? How many times people tended to feel the pain?

The tendency towards self-destruction, unfortunately, is not always easily visible and perceived. This makes it difficult for the environment, like friends and family, of the patient to intervene immediately and to solve the problem with success. Besides, anyone who adopts a self-destructive behavior or habit, usually manages to “cover” it quite well.

What is described as self-destructive behavior or attitude, ranges from acts or thoughts that concern insignificant things that can lead to death. The truth is that there are many forms of expression of self-destruction. Many times, these Behaviors are not perceived, but they are hidden in the human subconscious. Continuous negative self-criticism, anorexia, bulimia, high-speed driving, substance abuse, self-harm, social isolation, gambling, depression, vulnerable personality, self-neglect and isolation are just some of the behaviors of self-destructive people. In fact, self-destruction can describe a whole range of behaviors, in which the infected person deliberately causes injuries. The most extreme form of self-destruction is the literal meaning of suicide.

Statistics of recent years have shown that the third cause of death for teenagers aged 14-18 in Europe and North America is suicide. According to studies, 72% from affected children tried to cut themselves, 35% burned themselves, 30% hit themselves, 22% prevented wound healing, 22% scratched various parts of the body with nails and 10% broke their bones or injured their joints.

Let’s be honest. At some point in our lives, we all felt disappointed or guilty of a situation. Our self-esteem came to the bottom. But we managed to hide it well behind social status or behind decent behaviors. But there are some people among us who do not have the strength or better not have the second thought about what is right and what the consequences will be. The lack of the second thought is automatically a sample of a “sick” level of psychological and emotional immaturity, with the result of overwhelming of the hormones, instincts and raw thoughts, leaving themselves without resistances, on a path where return is not always certain. These are behaviors that, in the short or long term, endanger the physical and the mental health. It is such a vicious circle, from which nobody can easily escape.

What are the causes people turn against themselves?

You hurt yourself on the outside, to try to kill things on the inside. Quotient factors are not easy to describe, because many parameters are involved at the same time: the heredity, the environment, the past experiences, personality, stress, uncertainty, difficult conditions, values, goals, insecurity, traumatic experiences, level of self-esteem.

People with a malfunction in relation to their lives, consider that something basically bad consumes them and have to keep it under strict control. Intentional self-destruction is surprisingly common among young people worldwide. It has been linked to personality disorder during adulthood, characterized by impulsive behaviors, unstable mood and a tendency to suicide.

The background to this is usually that those affected people have suffered a physical or mental abuse in the past so that they have been neglected and that they have never learned how to control their feelings. Even if it does not usually appear to outsiders, a self- destruction is a try to relieve internal pressure, also a call for help or a kind of self-punishment, as the result of failure. The astonishing about it is that there people feel after the act, exhaustion, lack of strength and, above all, a bad conscience.

What should we do?

In order to break the vicious circle of self-destruction, each person must discover, either by himself or with the help of someone specialist, the cause about the tense of self- destruction. A constant therapy would be a good start to improvement. Conscious self-realization may put an end to what previously seemed impossible. Do not forget that the more self-destructive people are, the more controversy and publicity they earn, which leads to the conclusion that these people need attention. So, family and friends may talk with them about their thoughts and feelings, about their problems and their experiences. They had to try to understand these people. They need everyone. No matter if parents or siblings. No matter if the best friend or the neighbor. All people who are standing by, have the opportunity to help to fight the self-destruction. Giving love and attention, doing activities and easily being there would mean a lot.

The time has come for everyone to decide who has ultimate control over life: impulses and insecure thoughts or the prospect of better self-expression? The final choice – consciously or subconsciously is always ours.
