Study Suggests, Just One Alcoholic Drink Per Day May Increase Stroke Risk

Orange County, CA - April 19th, 2019 - New research suggests that drinking one to two glasses of an alcoholic beverage can increase the risk of suffering a Stroke

Previous studies claimed that moderate drinking could prevent other diseases, including strokes. However, the new research ties consuming a small amount of alcohol with high blood pressure leads to a higher risk of a stroke. Previously, a Study proved there is no healthy level of drinking, and one is too many.

The study had individuals drink either a bottle of beer, a small glass of wine, or a single measure of spirits.  The study results showed that one to two drinks a day increased stroke risk by 10% to 15% and that four drinks a day increased the risk of having a stroke by 35%.

“There are no protective effects of moderate alcohol intake against stroke. Even moderate alcohol consumption increases the chances of having a stroke. The findings for heart attack were less clear-cut, so we plan to collect more evidence,” said study co-author Zhengming Chen from the Nuffield Department of Population Health, the University of Oxford in a press release.

Researchers from Peking University, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the University of Oxford, discovered the effect of alcohol consumption on strokes from following 500,000 Chinese people for about a decade.

The study authors add that there are common genetic variants in East Asian populations, that considerably decreases alcohol tolerance, due to them causing an extreme unpleasant flushing reaction after drinking alcohol. Despite the genetic variants highly reducing the amount people drink, they are unrelated to other lifestyle factors including smoking.

In most cases, scientists were in unison with the study results, but few pointed out possible drawbacks.

“This study uses a novel genetic approach to try to determine the effect of alcohol consumption on risk of cardiovascular disease. Although it has previously been suggested moderate alcohol intake may reduce risk of stroke or heart disease, this new study adds to recent evidence that finds no protective effect even at low levels of intake. Sadly, the hope that alcohol somehow protects against cardiovascular disease is probably unfounded,” said Tim Chico, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Sheffield.

More research is required to discover the full effect of alcohol consumption. Findings of the study appear in The Lancet Journal.
