November 6, 2017. Care-home abuse in the UK. You cant really know until you put someone in care-home what's going to happen to them. There are good care homes, but not enough of them. I've been in two care homes on the same street. One was Heaven and one was hell. The one that was heaven was actually £200.00 cheaper. That's the lottery we have with care-home. Talk to the manager and see what your instincts tell you. Do you feel comfortable with them. November 6, 2017. International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. In 2001, the UN General Assembly declared November 6 of each year as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict for the safe disposal of weapons of war.

November 4, 2017. Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Borne in Germany to demand greater action to combat global warning. The city is preparing to host the United Nations annual climate summit. The White House is playing down official reports saying, human activity was likely to have caused 90% of total temperature rise since 1950. Radio 2 News

November 4, 2017. Stop norovirus spreading this winter. Norovirus, sometimes known as the 'winter vomiting bug', is the most common stomach bug in the UK, affecting people of all ages. It is highly contagious and is transmitted by contact with contaminated surfaces, an infected person, or consumption of contaminated food and water. The symptoms of norovirus are very distinctive - People often report a sudden onset of nausea followed by projectile vomiting and watery diarrhoea. Most people will make a full recovery in 1-2 days. It is important to keep hydrated, especially children and the elderly.  Good hand hygiene is important to stop the spread of the virus. November 4, 2017. Deadly plague epidemic in Madagascar is now at 'crisis' point and could reach mainland Africa where it will be 'difficult to control', warns expert as World Bank releases $5M of aid. Cases of the plague have spiralled by 37 per cent in less than a week, data shows. The World Health Organization now states that there are 1,801 suspected cases. At least 127 deaths have been recorded, but experts warn this could also rocket. World Bank released an extra $5 million to control the deadly outbreak. Daily Mail.

November 4, 2017. Egyptian authorities have detained a British woman who entered the country carrying painkillers. Laura Plummer, 33, a shop worker who lives in Hull, was arrested after 290 tramadol tablets and some naproxen for her husband’s sore back was found in her suitcase. She then reportedly signed her name beneath a 38-page statement in Arabic, upon request, believing she would be able to leave the airport afterwards and begin her two-week break by Red Sea. Instead, she was put into a cramped cell with 25 other women, where she has remained for almost a month. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting a British woman and her family following her detention in Egypt."Guardian.

November 3, 2017. 1 in 3 woman who get breast cancer are over 70, so don't assume you're past it. A lump isn't the only sign of breast cancer. If you notice any changes to your breasts, tell your doctor straight away. Finding it early makes it more treatable and could save your life. NHS.

November 3, 2017. Cannabis users in Italy can smoke the plant as long as they follow the Rastafarian religion a court has ruled. A 'Bari judge freed a man caught with 2oz. He said it was a sacred herb used for medication. Metro News.

November 2, 2017. Drivers have won the right to use toilets of businesses they deliver to. The health and safety executive ruling comes after a long campaign by 'Union Unite'. It argued that drivers who were forced to cross their legs ran a wide range of risks including urinary infections and bladder risk. Presenter Steve Wright. Radio 2.

November 2, 2017. Alzheimer’s disease: Risk of future diagnosis could be spotted in middle age. Scientists have found a link between inflammation which may speed up brain shrinkage in later life. It has raised hope that a simple blood test could flag up who stands the greatest chance of being ravaged by the incurable disease. The findings last night prompted a leading British professor to suggest that aspirin, a common over-the-counter anti-inflammatory, could slash dementia risk.  Researchers claim people who have indicators of inflammation in their blood in their 40s and 50s may have more brain shrinkage decades later. The cell loss was found in areas of the brain specifically affected by Alzheimer’s, which now affects more than 500,00 people in the UK. Daily Express.

November 2, 2017. A disease that affects ten times as many people as HIV. 'Viral hepatitis' which inflames the liver. There are five types of hepatitis, A, B, C, D, and E, spread through contaminated food and water, or via blood or other bodily fluids depending on the type. Four out of five patients with hepatitis C don't even know they're infected, but in the long term, they might develop cancer or cirrhosis of the liver, leading to 1.3 million deaths worldwide each year. The W.H.O wants to eliminate hepatitis C by 2030, and some countries like Egypt, Georgia and New Zealand are on track. Others like the US and the UK aren't. At the world hepatitis summit in South Paolo in Brazil this week, delegates will be discussing how and whether elimination can happen.  BBC World Service: Health Check

November 1, 2017. Nearly half of all GP's (doctors) are struggling to cope with the pressures of the job which is affecting the care they deliver. One in six have turned to drugs or alcohol to help them cope, and some in London are leaving the profession altogether because of an increase in work-load, and under-resourcing. ITV News.

November 1, 2017. Beware of consuming black licorice if you're over 40. Too much of the candy can cause dangerous heart arrhythmia, FDA warns. Eating about one eight of a pack of black licorice a day for too long can cause heart arrhythmia and high blood pressure in people over 40. An ingredient in the candy lowers potassium levels, upsetting the heart's rhythm. Licorice poisoning is rare, but people of all ages should still be careful when they indulge. Daily Mail News.
