Billing and Coding Methods for the Top Behavioral Health Conditions

The landscape of healthcare is continually evolving, and one area that has garnered significant attention in recent years is Behavioral Health. The demand for behavioral healthcare services has surged, with a 20.1 percent increase since the first quarter of 2019, as revealed by an analysis from Trilliant Health. This growth in demand has been further exacerbated by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring the importance of understanding and effectively managing behavioral health conditions.

The Rising Tide of Behavioral Health Conditions

To grasp the significance of the situation, it’s essential to delve into the numbers. Trilliant Health’s analysis delved into claims from its all-payer database to gauge the evolving demand for behavioral health services. Anxiety disorders and eating disorders, in particular, have emerged as the leading culprits behind the surge in claims since 2019. Anxiety disorders saw a remarkable 44.9 percent increase in claims while eating disorders followed closely with a 41 percent uptick during the same period.

However, it’s not just anxiety and eating disorders that have taken center stage.

Alcohol and substance use disorders witnessed a substantial 23.7 percent increase in claims, emphasizing the widespread issue of addiction.

Depressive disorders also made their presence felt with an 18.6 percent increase in claims, highlighting the need for effective intervention and treatment.

Bipolar disorders, with a 12.2 percent increase, have added to the complexity of managing behavioral health conditions.

Not all conditions have followed this upward trajectory. ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and schizophrenia, while significant, showed a slight decrease in claims.

ADHD experienced a modest -1.1 percent decrease.

Schizophrenia saw a -14.9 percent decline over the same period.

However, these conditions continue to be of great concern and require careful management.
