EDINBURG, TX — This March 21st, the Rio Grande Valley Down Syndrome Association (RGVDSA) is proud to commemorate World Down Syndrome Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the contributions and uniqueness of individuals with Down syndrome. Recognized globally since 2005, this special day is marked on the 21st day of the third month to symbolize the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

As a leader in awareness, the RGVDSA has been an active participant in World Down Syndrome Day festivities since 2012, advocating for the rights, and well-being of individuals with Down syndrome. This year, the Association is thrilled to announce a series of events designed to educate, celebrate, and engage the community of the Rio Grande Valley.

A Day of Educational Fun and Awareness

The celebration kicks off at the Dustin Sekula Memorial Library, located at 1906 S. Closner Blvd., Edinburg, TX. At 6:00 PM, attendees will have the privilege of listening to Addison Bortnick, a self-advocate with Down syndrome, who will host a special story time featuring “Everyone Belongs” by Heather Davis, a New York Times Best Selling Author. Addison’s dedication to spreading awareness and acceptance of Down syndrome was recently honored at the Texas Capitol, and her participation is a cornerstone of the day’s events. Alongside the story time, guests will be treated to hands-on activities, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Support Through Pizza and Play

In a unique blend of fun and philanthropy, the RGVDSA partners with Peter Piper Pizza across the Rio Grande Valley for a day-long fundraiser from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. A portion of the proceeds from your purchases, when mentioning RGVDSA, will go directly to supporting the Association and its mission. Participating locations will feature enjoyable activities and giveaways, making it a perfect outing for families and supporters alike.

Rock Your Socks Campaign

Embracing the spirit of awareness and conversation, the RGVDSA encourages everyone to participate in the “Rock Your Socks” initiative. On March 21st, individuals are invited to don their most vibrant, unique, or mismatched socks. This symbolic gesture is rooted in the idea that chromosomes resemble colorful little socks, making it a visual and engaging way to raise awareness about Down syndrome and initiate conversations about diversity and inclusion.

As the publishers of Texas Border Business, we stand with the RGVDSA in celebrating the achievements and potential of individuals with Down syndrome. We encourage our readers and residents of the Rio Grande Valley to join these events, to learn, to celebrate, and to support this important cause. It’s an opportunity to come together as a community, to foster understanding, and to champion the message that every individual, regardless of genetic makeup, has valuable contributions to make to our society.

Join us in this meaningful celebration, as we work towards a more inclusive world where everyone belongs and is celebrated for their unique selves.
