PHARR, Texas – Improper disposal of Medication can lead to lost drugs, environmental contamination, and misuse. To combat this issue, the UNIDAD Coalition, in collaboration with the DEA and other community partners, launched secure Drop Boxes for unused prescription medication throughout Hidalgo County in 2018. Their mission: to establish a safe environment, free from prescription misuse.

In October 2022, the DEA collected an impressive 1,691 pounds of unused or expired medication from over 10 Hidalgo County Drop Boxes.

This year, on October 28, 2023, the UNIDAD Coalition extends an invitation to the community to actively participate in National Takeback Day by disposing of their unused or expired medications at local drop boxes. Your contributions will play a crucial role in creating a community that is rid of potentially life-threatening and unused medications.

A list of Drop Boxes throughout the RGV is accessible at https://www.bhsst.org/drop-box-locations/

Allisoun Brenner, UNIDAD Coalition Coordinator, expressed her thoughts on this important day: “National Takeback Day is an opportunity for friends, families, and neighbors to join forces against improper medication disposal. By showcasing the unity of our community, we can foster a thriving environment with responsible prescription disposal practices, cleaner waterways, and reduced access to those most vulnerable to prescription poisoning.”
