South Texas Health System’s Regional Vice President Charles (Chuck) Stark has been appointed to the Texas Hospital Association’s Board of Trustees. His term begins immediately and expires on December 31, 2023.

Founded in 1930, the Texas Hospital Association (THA) is the leadership organization and principal advocate for the state’s hospitals and health care systems. One of the largest hospital associations in the country, the THA aims to enhance its members’ abilities to improve accessibility, quality and cost-effectiveness of health care for all Texans.

The organization represents more than 85 percent of the state’s acute-care hospitals and health care systems, which employ more than 400,000 healthcare professionals throughout the Lone Star State.

“We are living in a time when hospitals, and those who work to provide healthcare and help support patient caregivers, are fulfilling an unprecedented need within each community,” says Stark. “The Texas Hospital Association Board serves an important role of advocating for those hospitals, caregivers and support team members to ensure that adequate funding and resources are dedicated to meet the needs of each community in Texas. I am honored to represent the people of South Texas and the great State of Texas as the newest member of the THA Board and assist the organization in its advocacy and education missions.”

Stark has served as the head of South Texas Health System, the largest integrated network of care in the Rio Grande Valley, since June 2018. In his position, he has regional responsibility for STHS’ 11 facilities, as well as hospitals in Laredo and Eagle Pass. In September 2020, Stark’s responsibilities were expanded to include oversight of Universal Health Services (UHS) acute care facilities in Amarillo and Texoma, Texas, as well as Enid, Oklahoma.

Prior to joining South Texas Health System, Stark served as chief executive officer of Brookwood Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala. Previous service includes several leadership roles as president and CEO of Columbus Regional Health System and Firelands Regional Health System. He has also served as senior vice president of the Acute Care Division of HealthSouth Corporation (now Encompass Health).
