BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism (EDT) announced the approval of a Texas enterprise project designation for an application submitted on behalf of DHR Health Brownsville by the City of Brownsville. The capital investment project is estimated to result in a $36.6 million net benefit (after-tax abatement) for the city. The announcement noted that DHR would enable the creation of 303 jobs in Brownsville, ultimately impacting economic development within the region.

The hospital, an extension of DHR Health in Edinburg, will give patients direct access to a trauma level I state-of-the-art facility. The 74,000 square foot hospital will include 40 medical/surgical beds for single occupancy and 60 medical/surgical beds for double occupancy.

“The Brownsville community will benefit from DHR’s Health specialized services, and we are looking forward to being able to provide healthcare access for the community at a large scale,” said Aida Coronado Garcia, Chief Operating Officer for DHR Health Brownsville.

Aside from this, the hospital will include three ICU beds, an emergency room, six operating rooms, state-of-the-art lab, and imaging equipment. Specialty care, including urology, bariatrics, gynecologic oncology, general surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric dentistry, gastroenterology, colorectal surgery, and neurosurgery, will be available for the residents of Brownsville and surrounding communities.

“We are grateful for this partnership with DHR Health, as we work towards building a healthier future for this region. This project will not only impact our area’s health but will be a great movement towards developing our workforce,” said Mayor Trey Mendez.

The Texas Enterprise Zone Program is an economic development tool by which local communities partner with the State of Texas to encourage job creation and capital investment in economically distressed areas of the state. For a business to receive benefits under the program, the local community must initially nominate a business to enterprise project designation.
