World Alzheimer’s Day : Alzheimer’s Disease and Fact

“Though those with Alzheimer’s might forget us, we as a society must remember them.”

According to health experts, it has been observed that in India a total of 3.7 million of people are suffering from Alzheimer and the figure is going to double up by the year 2030. Alzheimer is the most common form of dementia and other neurological related disorders.

With the recent research by various medical associations, it has been observed that females contribute to 70% of the total burden of Alzheimer in comparison to males.

Aging is one of the main factors that contribute to this disorder; generally people over the age of 60years are more likely to suffer from Alzheimer. As in senior years, people don’t exercise their Brain enough to stay active and hence it leads to loss of memory.

Alzheimer is a slow progressive neurological disorder of the brain. It’s a neurodegenerative type of dementia, a kind of disease which gets worse with time. In Alzheimer, there is impairment of memory and disturbance during reasoning, planning, speaking, etc. According to scientist, it is believed that during Alzheimer, there is production of a particular protein (beta-amyloid protein) in the brain which leads to the damage of the nerve cells.

There are various symptoms for this disorder, which confirms the disease. They are:

  • Worsened ability to take in and remember new information
  • Impairments to reasoning, complex tasking, exercising judgment
  • Impaired visuospatial abilities
  • Impaired speaking, reading and writing
  • Changes in personality and behavior

There are generally 2 methods adopted for the treatment of Alzheimer:

  • Non-drug strategy
  • Prescription medication

Non-drug strategy is the most recommended and a better option for the treatment of Alzheimer. Depending on the severity of the disorder, prescription medications are suggested.

One can adopt various methods to stay healthy and stay away from Alzheimer like maintaining a healthy weight. Eating healthy diet which includes more of fruits and vegetables, healthy fats and proteins. Exercising everyday regularly for at least 30 minutes as it helps in improving the flow of blood to the brain. Regularly exercising the brain by playing puzzle games, crosswords, etc.
