Things to Know About Breech Position

During 9 months of your pregnancy, you need to go for different scans for checking the actual development of the baby. Presentation Scan is also one of the important scan used to check the actual position of the baby inside the mother womb. The baby usually adapts either of the two positions, either Breech position or Cephalic position. Today we will discuss in brief about the breech position.

What is the Breech Position & Cephalic Position, how it will be detected?

A baby is said to be in Breech position when the feet of the child touches the womb & head is in the air. It is a very common position, but after 36 weeks often babies change their position to head-bottom. These changes can be detected by Presentation Scan at 36 weeks.

Types of breech position

There are 3 types of breech positions: Complete, Incomplete & Frank breech.

  • Complete Breech:- In this, the baby is in sitting position, with bent knees & feet are closer to the birth canal.

  • Incomplete Breach:- In this position, one of the baby’s knee is bent & one of the feet is closer to the birth canal.

  • Frank Breech:- In this position baby’s feet is straight up against his head & bottom is near the birth canal.

Reasons why babies attain a breech position?

Doctors can’t specify the exact reason for the breech position, but some of the reasons are:

1. A woman may have several pregnancies before.

2. Length of the umbilical cord is irregular.

3. When there is irregular size & shape of the uterus.

4. Presence of too much or too little amniotic fluid around the baby

5. When there are twins & one of the twin is in a cephalic position and the other is in a breech position

How to turn the baby back to the cephalic position?

If it is confirmed that the baby is in a breech position, then doctors & midwives usually advice to perform ECV or external cephalic version. This will increase the chance of turning the baby to a head-down position. But it should be done under proper guidance & advice.
