Tips for Traveling with Hearing Aids

Planes, Trains & Automobiles:  Traveling with Hearing Aids

Traveling for business or pleasure can take you to new places that often bring communication and navigation challenges, especially if you have a Hearing loss. By planning ahead and knowing what to expect, travel can be an enjoyable, stress free experience. With summer quickly approaching, we begin with some general tips to consider if you’re headed out of town. Check back on the blog for the rest of our travel series, detailing specific considerations for different types of travel or see this article for even more information.

Be Prepared with Equipment

  • Bring extra supplies like batteries, chargers, domes and wax guards to make sure you can keep your hearing aids working well during your trip.
  • Don’t forget a protective case to store your hearing aids when you are not wearing them – and remove them before swimming or if you might be exposed to water.
  • If you use any accessories with your hearing aids, bring them along with any necessary chargers to be ready for any situation.
  • If your trip may include being around a loud event or dangerously loud sounds (fireworks, loud concerts, machine noise, etc.) be sure to pack earplugs to help block out the extra noise and protect your hearing.

Do Your Research

  • Are you going on a tour or to any venues (museums, theaters) that offer assistive listening devices or telecoil loop systems? If so, talk to your audiologist to see if your hearing aids may be compatible to allow you to more easily hear performances, tour guides and announcements.

Advocate for Yourself

  • Let people know you use hearing aids and don’t hesitate to ask for clarification if you need it, whether from a cab driver, restaurant server, friends or family! Sharing this information will help others provide better service and facilitate an easier trip.
