Oil pulling and its benefits

Used primarily in Ayurvedic medicine, Oil Pulling is a fantastic oral detoxification procedure that is simply done by swishing around a tablespoon of oil (typically pure organic coconut, sasame or olive oil) beneficially in improving gums and removing harmful bacteria.

History of Oil pulling

Oil pulling began as an ancient Ayurveda gargling treatment more than 3,000 years ago.  These treatments where deeply personal ones which were prescribed to treat bealth imbalances. Typically, ayurvedic practitioners would prescribe these treatments for inflammation of the mouth, dryness or any other oral ailment.  More specific treatments would be prescribed for head aches, hormone imbalances, congestion and a tonne of others.

How to oil pull?

The basic idea is that oil is swished in the mouth for a short time each day and that this action helps improve oral health. It is important to know that the oil should NEVER be swallowed as it is full of bacteria, toxins and pus that are no longer in your mouth.

Benefits of Oil pulling

Oil pulling works by cleaning (detoxifying) the oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally sucks the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth and creates a clean, antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that is needed to prevent cavities and disease.
This unbelievably effective procedure has been used for centuries as a traditional Indian remedy to:

  • Cure tooth decay
  • Kill bad breath
  • Heal bleeding gums
  • Prevent heart disease
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Whiten teeth
  • Soothe throat dryness
  • Prevent cavities
  • Heal cracked lips
  • Boost Immune System
  • Improve acne
  • Strengthen gums and jaw

Oil pulling is completely safe and can be done as often as you like! I started using this simple yet effective method after suffering from a very painful tooth experience and have been amazed by the improvement in both my oral hygiene but also my overall well being- i can’t recommend this highly effective method enough. You can also add essential oils such as Clove oil or tea tree oil to assist in maintaining a healthy mouth hygiene.
