Why Kindness Matters to Your Health

You do not feel very well. You when to the doctor and they did not help at all. You read about some herb and it helped a little but you still do not feel well at all. Now add uncertainty and confusion to the mix of not feeling well.

Need a sure fire way to help you feel better?

Perform an act of Kindness or of generosity toward someone else. Researchers at the United Kingdom’s Oxford and Bournemouth universities wanted to investigate this widely held view. The study team delved into scientific literature and reviewed more than 400 studies on the subject, 21 of which were based on actual tests of whether kindness leads to happiness. After analyzing the findings, the team concluded that being kind could contribute to happiness, although the effect is apparently quite modest. They noted that the research they evaluated didn’t distinguish between showing kindness to family and friends versus

Here is the background.

Researchers at the England’s Oxford and Bournemouth universities wanted to determine if this was actually true or not.

For starters, the researchers looked into the scientific literature and reviewed more than 400 studies.

End results were that kindness and other such emotions did, in fact, contribute to happiness. The effects were not huge but there were significant.

It should be noted that researchers did not distinguish between kindness towards family and/or friends and kindness toward strangers. I say this because when you comb through the literature, the correlation between kindness and strangers is quite high.

Edgar Cayce once was quoted as saying, “Want to (successfully) treat depression? Do something for someone else.”  The issue here is that energy that is focused inward has a tendency to form depression. Energy that is unexpressed forms frustration. When we place our thoughts and focus on helping another person (or group), that energy has a tendency to transform into something constructive.

When we see the best in others and desire to take away their suffering, we are in fact, doing the identical thing with and to ourselves. By helping others, we help ourselves. . . . literally and physically.

From a physical standpoint, performing an act of kindness assists:

  • Our immunity improves
  • Functioning of the liver improves
  • The health of the heart and cardiovascular system is elevated
  • Brain functioning improves

There are probably quite a few others but these are the most pronounced.
