More Instances of Xarelto Bleeding Found – Study

The breakthrough anticoagulant Xarelto’s problems keep mounting as new studies suggest a link between the drug and cases of stomach Bleeding and eye hemorrhaging. The studies come amid hundreds of lawsuits that have been filed against the makers of Xarelto, alleging negligence that has led to death in some cases.

In one of the studies mentioned above two doctors found that elderly patients who decided to transition from the older blood thinning drug warfarin to Xarelto experienced the side effects. The bleeding took place between the lens and retinas of the patients’ eyes.

The hemorrhaging occured shortly after the patients started using Xarelto. The findings were reported in the June 2015 edition of JAMA Ophthalmology after being confirmed with subsequent testing.

Another Study of approximately 46,000 people found that there was possibly a 2X higher risk of developing stomach bleeds with Xarelto as compared to warfarin. The authors of this study pointed out that there was a 50% increase with Pradaxa, but a “more than twofold increased risk with rivaroxaban (Xarelto).”

Other studies have reported that the risks of bleeding are highest in elderly patients. One such study (a 5 year observational study presenting in 2015 to the AGS) found that almost 75% of bleeding events happened to patients who were 75 and older. In the case of fatal bleeding events that led to death, the average patient was about 82 years old.

There are hundreds of Xarelto lawsuits currently underway where plaintiffs’ claim the companies behind the drug were negligent in warning the public about the potentially fatal risks, despite knowing. If you or a loved one has taken Xarelto and experienced bleeding, learn more about your options here.
