Outdoor Activities for Seniors: Keep Fit, Keep Healthy

How many of us take for granted the fact we can get up and Walk in the fresh air anytime we feel like it, without any restrictions? Getting out and about is one of life’s great pleasures and as we age we may find that because of poor health or mobility issues, our ability to do this becomes somewhat limited. It needn’t be so, and there are steps you can take to make sure you stay as fit and Healthy for as long as possible, even if you’re not in the best of health.

Get out in the great outdoors

Anyone living in a retirement home or sheltered accommodation should find that there are many activities and outdoor themed games and exercises planned on a fairly regular basis. However, if you’re a senior living alone or as part of a couple and would like to get started on a simple fitness or health regime, here are a few hints and tips to get you started:

Gardening

If you’re still lucky enough to be able to maintain your own garden, then this is one great way of keeping fit and getting fresh air too. Even better if you start to grow some of your own fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables. Gentle weeding and digging can be therapeutic as well as pleasurable and give you a great cardiovascular workout.

Fishing

Think about learning to fish – it’s a perfect idea to get you out and about and potentially end up with something healthy to eat for your dinner, too! Not only that, but you can get others involved such as peers or family members, giving you company as well as a chance to be out and about getting some gentle exercise as well.

Golf

It’s often seen as a pastime that is mainly for professionals, but if you can find a local golf club – why not consider starting lessons or learning to play from scratch? You’ll be getting a good long walk around the course and also the chance to socialize at the end and relax with a drink or two.

Gentle walks

If none of the above appeal, then why not get out into the countryside for a stroll? Nature can play an important part in not only keeping you fit, but also providing you with mental stimulation too. If you’re lucky enough to have a smartphone or a great digital camera, combine your exercise with some photography too, and keep the memories alive.
