The Five Best Sites to Take a Free IQ Test

IQ tests date back to 1905 when Alfred Benit, a French psychologist began to “test” children of different mental capabilities. He set out to find a way to identify those students needing special programs in school and created the foundation that modern Intelligence testing is based on.

There are many tests out there – whether it’s to test IQ, verbal, social, emotional, language, and many more.  I’ve put together resources where you can get free IQ tests online.

What is an IQ?

Intelligence Quotient or IQ is a sum score from several standardized tests developed by psychologists in order to evaluate the level of human intelligence.

IQ tests are typically used to diagnose learning disabilities, however, they are also utilized for educational placements and identifying employment candidates.

IQ scores are only approximate calculations of one’s intellectual capacity, because how can we really determine concretely such an abstract thing as intelligence?

IQ Test – How to Measure Intelligence?

Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) is the most widely used IQ test that Measures cognitive skills and intelligence. There are over a dozen measures of intelligence, some include:

  • Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scales
  • Woodcock–Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities
  • Raven’s Progressive Matrices
  • Cattell Culture Fair III
  • Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales
  • Thurstone’s Primary Mental Abilities

Typically IQ tests evaluate one’s reasoning and problem-solving abilities. The WAIS (version IV), for example, has 15 subtests that measure things like:

  1. Verbal
  2. Perceptual Reasoning
  3. Memory
  4. Arithmetic
  5. Processing Speed

The test results from each subset are then combined to determine the IQ.

What’s a Good IQ Score?

The average IQ score of the U.S. is 98, Canada is 99. 70% of IQ scores are in the range of 85-115, 95% fall between 70-130 according to Wilderdom.

Using the Lewis Terman scale, a person is considered a genius or have a high IQ with an IQ score over 140:

  • Over 140 – Genius or near genius
  • 120 – 140 – Very superior intelligence
  • 110 – 119 – Superior intelligence
  • 90 – 109 – Normal or average intelligence
  • 80 – 89 – Dullness
  • 70 – 79 – Borderline deficiency
  • Under 70 – Definite feeble-mindedness

To put some context around this, Albert Einstein had an IQ of 160, and to be a member of MENSA, you would need a score that is at least in the 98th percentile or better on approved tests of intelligence. So for example, you are required to score 132 or over on the Stanford-Binet test, or at least 148 on the Cattell to be considered.

Controversy Around IQ Testing

The biggest controversy around these measures of intellectual abilities and their scores is that the information is used to advance racist agendas. Some believe that race, sex or other backgrounds is a factor in quantifying intelligence. This narrow-minded thinking purports that certain groups have lower IQ scores due to genes.

There is also the issue of bias. Some of these tests are geared to discriminate because of their very design, for example, a non-native English speaker may not do well on an English verbal intelligence testing. The use of the Culture Fair test may be utilized in this case as its design measures the relationships between forms and structures.

Intelligence is a theoretical concept, is it even possible to define it with 100% accuracy? There’s also many facets to intellectual capacity, for example, emotional intelligence or ‘street smarts’ that don’t typically get tested.
