Good and bad of TV watching kids

With children ages 3 years to 16 years old in my little apartment, I have very little control over what my toddler watches.  However, one thing is certain.  Kids shows failed to attract his attention.  I am spared from Barney and all those sickening kids programme like Hi-5, Wiggles or whateva you call those gay-ish guys singing in their colourful bodysuits.

I had unsubscribed the cartoon channel because I found that my 10 years old was getting annoyingly American-ish in bad attitudes, manners and even eating habits. It is a relief now because the TV hardly blares in the living room.  They can only watch so much MTV. I also discourage them Watching Fear Factor, Simple Life (with Paris Hilton) and some reality shows like those that involve eating toenails (of other people) stuffed in bread for a  mere USD250.

Parents ought to weigh the consequences of watching these shows and how it affects their children.  For e.g. my eldest son who was 16 years old was watching Oprah Winfrey and that “Stupid Girls” singer.  The topic touched on how American girls have shortchanged themselves with nudity etc and how respects for them have lowered.

I was the unofficial commentator sitting next to my son, agreeing and disagreeing with the invited guests and  etc.  It annoys the hell out of my sons, sometimes, when I butted in with my comments.  But I suppose it is only right that I wield my mom status (and wisdom) so that they learn  how to respect girls and what constitute proper behaviours and Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie aren’t for real.

So, young parents, if you are wondering if it is ok for your babies and toddlers to watch TV, do read this lengthy article from The Associate Press which I found on MSNBC .  The TV is churning out a whole load of junks and the worst of the lots are the reality shows where guys go into girls room to sniff out their dirty underwears and picking one girl as their date etc.  Know that we have a long, long way to go as parents and it doesn’t stop after the Barney and Teletubbies but go on through their young adults stage.

Of course, I wouldn’t encourage a total ban because it will cause immense tensions to kids and you may end up with rebellious kids.  I want my kids to be exposed to all the evils of modern lifestyle and yet, being able to weigh the good from the bad.  This can only be achieve if we have the time to spare and the wisdoms which we ourselves gain from exploring what lies on the dark side.
